So, I got a new job. Before I talk about it I'll start by saying I've been lazy since February. Haven't been to the gym, just been working from home and writing. This week I started my job as a mover. We've had record high temperatures here, the jobs I've been working have been understaffed and underestimated. (I I hate granite furniture.) Today is the end of my week. Only worked 4 days but worked 60 hours. I'm beginning to think that as long as I with this job, I might not attend a gym again. I feel like I've gotten the best workout ever, every day. Anyone else here been involved in this line of work? I'd love some tips/advice.

Did it for about 5 years while at university. Last couple of years mostly heavy shit like pianos, safes industrial kitchen equipment pays quite well in Sweden but if you're gonna lift heavy stuff you need a strong back. All of my colleagues were convicts or illegals lol fun guys.

We get paid to move everything in homes to new homes. So pianos are certainly something we deal with. Despite my lean build, I must have a strong back, as mine hasn't been bothering me. My arms are taking a beating though.

When I worked we usually had 2 experienced guys for the heavy stuff and a bunch of younger guys for boxes and regular furniture. Carrying heavy was the good work, sit in the truck for a few hours work for 15 minutes and chill for another 3hours. Granted you got nightmare gigs like a 1 tonne piano up 5 flights of spiral staircases in Stockholm old town.

As someone who thought he had a strong back then hurt it lifting well below his max weight be careful with that line of thinking broseph. Look up "pelvic tilt" nearly everyone has one. Correct that shit quick in my humble opinion.

Congrats on the new job.

My worst work injury in moving I sustained from lifting a 20 kg office chair. Didn't pay any attention and jerked the fuck out of my back. Couldn't get out of bed for two days. Most guys get injured from light stuff, when you're lifting heavy you pay attention. Then there are idiots, was doing a piano with a guy in winter, his harness came loose and piano started sliding off of the truck lift, dumb dude tries to catch it with one arm shattered his forearm, I nobly jumped out of the way.

LOL @ diving on a grenade for $20 an hour, $12 an hour when I used to relocate offices between buildings for a living.

Darwin award level stuff. Had a slight racist streak all my African colleagues always called him boss lol when you have a guy getting bitched out in his native tongue by dudes speaking it for three months it's funny stuff. We also got paid under the table so not like he scored big on insurance smh some people.

Eh, what's this about proper lifting technique, all the experienced guys tell me to lift with my back in a twisting jerking motion. ;)

Congrats on the job, man. One of my buddies used to do that work. He loved it because he said it was like getting paid to work out. He would drink a protein shake in the morning before work, then eat chicken or tuna at lunch. He got ripped by doing nothing other than working.

Once you learn the ropes, it's definitely a line of work that you can do on your own. So make connections and pay attention to the industry. Start your own LLC, hire a guy or two and be your own boss.

Use straps as often as you can.
Make with the banter and always find positive ways to solve problems when they do arise, sometimes just shutting up and keeping moving is enough. Pace yourself with the boxes and do your best to make sure you can see when moving shit.
Never rush a packing job.

Holy Fuck, 5 years? The best I could manage was 3 seasons- moving in winter (like snow and blizzard shit) fucking sucks. Tip my hat to you, sir.

Hauler @Alco Hauler unfortunately I'll have to wait 2 years after I quit to work with another moving company or start my own per two men & a truck non-competition contracts.

@blank Straps are my true Live in life, I get along very well with all my workers so busy banter is always there, lately the jobs have been in 100+ degree weather though, so we don't have the breath to talk lol. We rarely move too many boxes and packing jobs are few and far between. But we have to wrap all furniture with "blankies" so really, every job is a pack job.

Non-Competes rarely hold up in court should you wish to pursue it. Especially for a line of work that has as little privileged information as a moving company.

I appreciate that, although this company does do things a lot differently than most companies, I don't think I'd do it the way they do anyways.

I used to like getting tips when I moved furniture. Paid for my lunch with tips.
