Yes kind of but BJ didn't get finished (he might have if the fight had been 5 rounds) and everyone knew Penn had shit cardio.

Plus Penn wasn't a massive favorite in that fight (though he may have been a slight favorite). Lastly nobody knew Conor would blow his was after 1.5 rounds.

If Nick and BJ was 5 rounds it was pretty obvious BJ was knocking him out. He was just starting to get in the groove when the fight ended. No way Nick lasts 5 rounds with the GOAT.

They should reverse the match ups and make those fights.

Nate vs BJ and Nick vs Conor. See if the similarities continue.

I was at the fight, those body shots by the end were making me cringe.... I was in full support of BJ, and at one point in the 1st round he tagged Diaz good, unfortunately he tried to finish him after that and gassed out. then Diaz took over and put on one of the worst beatings I have ever seen.

now I am sad.

I have never been more nervous before a fight than I was for BJ vs. Nick. It was a fight I wanted to see for so long but figured I never would because they were cool with each other. It was also a fight I truly wanted neither guy to lose. I was literally trembling uncontrollably the whole fight.

When Nick basically took over the fight after rolling through that ground exchange I finally felt like he secured his spot in the MMA pantheon as one of the all time greats, which I'd suspected he would after he pieced up Frank Shamrock.

Combined, the Diaz bros have one of the most entertaining fight catalogues of anyone in history. On the surface, they're stylistically similar, but their approach to fighting has always struck me as very different at least up until this weekend. That thing Nick has that Nate has sometimes lacked, Nate found this weekend. It's been a great privilege to watch them compete in victory or defeat and Nick's fight with BJ is one of the best examples of that.

Couldn't agree more. You can draw a lot of parallels from the Diaz style to Stockton vs Hilo or Dublin. The most important in my opinion is what a place this will have in their "CV"s. The BJ Penn victory was a great win for Diaz, probably the biggest in his resume if you consider the hype/stage etc. Nate's was Conor, a lot of people saying this was him stepping out of his big brother's shadow and in some ways I agree. I've always heard that the bros had a different style and it always made me a bit sad to see Nate not have the early success..then you look at who beat him recently, the fashion he lost (very hard to finish) and you wonder when his moment will come. Ever since they announced the MJ fight, I hoped he'd rise to the occasion and he did so. The best thing I guess is it looks like we have a lot more of the Diaz bros to see and I can't wait.

Penn without a doubt won that first round. Nick showed some solid bjj defense by not allowing BJ to get his hooks in once BJ took Nick down, but then BJ battered Nick's eye with punches.

The second round could have realistically been 10-8 for Nick. It was that ugly. BJ's head bounced around like a bobble head a few times. The third was 10-9 for Nick.

29-28 or 29-27 are reasonable scores. If it had gone to the fourth or fifth rounds BJ might have been finished or had the fight stopped by his corner.

Towards the end of the second round, BJ could've shot for a desperation takedown, exposed his neck and tapped quickly to a RNC. It would've been harder to wrap our collective minds around considering the level of Penn's BJJ, but would anybody have blamed him at that point? Instead, he came out swinging in the third round, and was maybe takedown or significant punch or two away from winning the round. That's something that's been completely overlooked in the years since his fight with Diaz. He didn't give up, and he is a fighter that many have accused of being a front runner throughout his career. I never thought it was a case of being a front runner as much as it was his bad training camps in Hawaii, and a lack of strength and conditioning at the level needed in the modern MMA era, but there are many who do view BJ that way. Had he retired after the Diaz fight, it might not have been the worst thing since he never broke, and went out swinging. Time will tell.

Yup, Conor and BJ handled a very similar situation quite differently.

I thought the same thing. I believed Mj fight was Nate's comeback/breakthrough fight that after he had success he would be back and will be running stronger than ever.
Right around when MJ fight was announced, I created a "Nate Diaz Appreciation Thread" on the UG and most ppl laughed at it and if that place had cool functions like here I probably would have got thousand rainbows! But who's laughing now bitches!!?
Anyway my point is that was the story of Nate's career. He was perceived overrated when he can't make good choices of his career, ppl said he was done after the thompson KO, denied that he was the biggest draw in LW, and never gave him a chance to win, always an underdog.
He was ranked 14 or something two fights ago, making 20/20 or 40/40 and now we're talking about biggest money fight or a title shot.
I'm so happy for Nate getting his career on track and a big boost on pay amd recognition. I'm so excited for what's lined up for the next chapter of Nate Diaz!!
