Kind of a Drag – The Buckinghams

Tuesday song of the day: Today’s song is about forgiving a cheating girlfriend.

The Buckinghams formed in Chicago in 1966, and in December of that year released Kind of a Drag, an oddly upbeat song about feeling crushed that your girlfriend cheated on you, but continuing to love her despite the betrayal.

After its release, Kind of a Drag started to climb the charts, and reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on February 18th, 1967. This started what would be a banner year for The Buckinghams, with the band placing five songs in the Top 40 in 1967, three of which made the Top 10. Fame is fleeting, however, and after 1967, the band never again had a Top 40 hit. The Buckinghams broke up in 1970, although they reformed in 1980 and continue to play the oldies circuit today.

In the Summertime – Mungo Jerry

Wednesday song of the day: Today’s song is the third highest selling single of all time.

In 1970, the English band Mungo Jerry released their debut single. It was written by the band’s leader Ray Dorset as a celebration of leisure activities in warm weather. Dorset claims that the song took only 10 minutes to write, and the bouncy beat proved infectious.

In the Summertime became a huge hit, reaching #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Although it didn’t reach #1 in the United States, it did sell very well for an extended period of time, instead of making the top of the charts and quickly fading. In the end, it sold over 30 million copies. This placed In the Summertime as the third biggest single of all time, behind the 50 million copies of Bing Crosby’s White Christmas, and the 33 million copies of Candle in the Wind 1997 by Elton John.

Hair of the Dog – Nazareth

Thursday song of the day: Today’s song was going to be titled Son of a Bitch, but the record label objected.

The Scottish band Nazareth released their sixth album, Hair of the Dog, in 1975. The title track told the story of a woman known for manipulating men to get what she wants, but the singer asserts that her tactics won’t work on him, because he’s a son of a bitch who doesn’t care about her. The chorus repeats the line “Now you’re messing with a son of a bitch” several times. The band wanted to title the song and the album Son of a Bitch, but A&M Records felt that this would hurt sales and insisted on a different title. In the end, the band went with Hair of the Dog, from the phrase “hair of the dog that bit you” that referred to the old hangover remedy of drinking a bit more alcohol to feel better in the morning.

The album was by far the biggest seller for Nazareth, with over 2 million copies sold. The title track was released as the B-side of the #8 hit Love Hurts in the United States, so Hair of the Dog did not chart on its own (except in Germany, where it was released as a separate single and ranked at #44). Since then, Hair of the Dog has become a staple of classic rock radio, and one of Nazareth’s best-known songs.
