Renzo's nice guy image was always very manufactured. He's a generally friendly guy when you meet him and smiles a lot, but even from the earliest days he was stepping on necks, jumping people, running his academy like a sadist and then eventually putting the cult leader John Danaher in charge even though he's one step north of Lloyd Irvin. The only reason people ever believed in this "beloved Renzo" image is because half of the world's BJJ instructors were total pricks and plenty of his acolytes had Stockholm syndrome. He's also just not very bright and has sold out to dictators all around the world.
What's the issue with John Danaher besides the obvious him looking and sounding like a cult leader? lol
He runs DDS like a cult. Brainwashes his grapplers. Steals their ideas and passes them off as his own. Basically benefits from having a master's degree and a Kiwi accent in a room full of kids who don't really know what's going on. The few who do usually have moved on.
That guy has a ponytail. Nobody pays any attention to guys with ponytails.
