Georges St-Pierre doesn’t think he’ll defend UFC middleweight title

From the moment Georges St-Pierre announced that he would be returning to competition at 185 pounds, there were questions about how long he would stay there.

“GSP” recently came back from a four-year hiatus and defeated Michael Bisping at UFC 217 to capture the middleweight championship, and he repeatedly stated that his contract dictate that he defend the title against interim champion Robert Whittaker.

However, on Wednesday, St-Pierre told TSN that he is having serious doubts about returning to his new division.

“We’ll talk about it, but I’m not sure if I compete I will go back at 185,” St-Pierre said. “I don’t think so.”

St-Pierre has spent almost the entirety of his 28-fight career competing at 170 pounds, the weight class where he twice captured UFC gold (plus one interim belt) and recorded nine consecutive successful title defenses before stepping away from MMA in November 2013. The UFC 217 main event marked the first time that St-Pierre fought at 185 pounds.

UFC president Dana White recently broke the news that St-Pierre was suffering from colitis, an illness that may be related to the changes GSP had to make to move up a weight class.

“Of course, in terms of weight, if I want to go back to compete at 185, I will - obviously eating, like I did what I did, I learned from my mistakes, I don’t think it’s a good thing to do, force myself to eat to gain muscle mass,” St-Pierre said. “I’ve always been against performance-enhancing drugs, and I did it the natural way. There is no easy way. I did it the hard way and it was to gain weight and to maintain my muscles mass and it was very hard and it was not healthy. I think the body has a natural weight it can perform at its best athletic ability and for me, the weight that I am now is my perfect weight.”

As a result of St-Pierre's illness, preliminary talks are currently underway to book Whittaker vs. Luke Rockhold for UFC 221 on Feb. 10 in Perth, Western Australia, MMA Fighting's Ariel Helwani has learned. The fight isn't signed just yet, but it is currently moving in the right direction. It's unclear at this time whether the fight would be for Whittaker's interim middleweight title or the official title.

I wrote a thread many months ago called 'GSP's cowardly comeback' and everyone got their panties twisted about it. GSP is a man who fights monsters in a cage, he is not a coward. But relative to other MMA fighters this has been an act of cowardice. He is afraid of genuine 185 pound contenders.

GSP opportunistically fucked over an entire division because he recognized the champ was a lame duck. And he was never going to fight the real contenders he fucked over. He made his money and gets a distorted achievement to add to his legacy, but this little foray has been the act of a weasel, not the act of the 'honorable martial artist' cleanskin he portrays.

GSP will fight Conor sometime in 2018 then retire.

I don't think there has ever been a fight that made so little sense for someone than Whitaker for GSP. A bigger, younger guy in his prime who already showed good defensive wrestling against a better (pure) wrestler than GSP. and no one even knows who Whitaker is. it's as big a no-no as there has ever been.

Gsp is a lier and a cheat. Greased against BJ. Lied all week about retiring after the Big Rig fight. Lied about defending the 185lb belt If he won. Dude just wants to pad his record. Don't fight no hitters.

If the division is not right for him, then he has the right to refuse. At least he is honest about it. He is the GOAT and the fact it pisses people off makes it even better. Go on and write your opinion pieces and essays about how much GSP sucks, history will remember him otherwise. The statistics will say otherwise, and all that fuck you money will say otherwise.

This is what the UFC is now, have you not watched this year? Why not blame the UFC for letting this happen? Why would a fighter let a chance of a title fight go? It's been happening in all divisions.

Cause GSP who considers himself a mixed martial artist and says he cares about the sport and PEDS and seems to genuinely does the right thing should be above a shitty move like this. I feel like its outta character for him to cheat a division full of contenders that he wont fight. He shouldnt skip line to a title fight unless he was the current 170 champ then people wouldnt care nearly as much. But a guy whos so vocal about fighters rights and all this should be above stealing a title fight from a deserving contender just cause he wants to pad his record with the weakest 185 champ of this era.

Go make history and be a paper champ who will run from contenders who earned a shot at that belt.

I expect this shit from WME but for gsp this as ridiculous as bisbing popping for PEDS. Hes a fucking hypocrite

So shouldn't that be on the UFC if their champ is only fodder to pad the GOAT's record?

Why is it GSP's fault the UFC allowed Bisping hold onto his belt for well over a year and only having to defend once against an over the hill fighter?

GSP would have been stupid not to fight Bisping when the opportunity was presented.

You shouldn't be so mean to Conor.
Yea he should take note. But conors not scared of contenders and would probably fight above his weight or fight godzilla aswell. Difference is hes just looking for money fights. Actually hes the money fight. Gsp is talking about legacy not money. And if he didnt defend his belt cause he was going to compete in the biggest fight of the decade in boxing i would have more leeway. But understand this isnt about money for GSP. Its about ducking fights and cramps and bubbleguts

But i agree tony vs conor asap or strip him. There are no double standards over here

Fuck. Read up on his condition, he’s not got fucking period cramps. It’s a life changing illness. I don’t know what you have against a fighter who’s been an ambassador for this sport since way before . Someone toke me, I probably deserve it

This right here. The belt nonsense is not a GSP problem, it's all over the place. It's what the UFC is now, it is what it is.

Also, you can't force fighters to fight in a weightclass they don't think is their best.

But a guy whos so vocal about fighters rights and all this should be above stealing a title fight from a deserving contender just cause he wants to pad his record with the weakest 185 champ of this era
How did he "steal" that fight? I think it was offered to GSP, and Bisping was all for that fight. With your reasoning, I think you could blame Bisping equally.

A few points to respond to in your post.

GSP went up in weight to fight the champ.

Everyone is looking for money fights. Fighting is a business, business decisions need to be made.

Conor never talks about legacy?

Conor neglected to defend belts well before Floyd's name was even spoken.

Ive watched mma since before gsp ever was anything. I enjoyed him until he bacame a safe fighter along with 90% of mma fans at that time. I respect his abilities and i thought that bisbing fight was one of his most exciting fights ever.

But he NEVER intended on defending that belt. He did it to stroke his ego or for the challenge or whatever.

But most likely he wanted to keep getting that million+ a year from sponsors by doing a fight thats IMO his main incentive. Plus bisbing was easy prey for anyone top 10 mw or probably even ww and WME has their heads up their asses so they will let that BS ride knowing he will tuck and run
