There was a similar situation in the caribbean where someone had their ass torn off. The experts believed that it was because of the feeding that went on to attract the the nurse sharks. The feed or bait bags hung around the butt area and then the people that run these dive groups reach around and get the bait out. They think the sharks learned where the food was so then they attacked the man or woman right in the ass. Nurse sharks are probably the most docile sharks in the world except for whale sharks, so the theory made some sense.

I have seen a shark underneath me and other surfers on the Oregon Coast when waiting for waves, have also seen the people on shore signal to come in when they see one.
Shark attacks are so rare, but they really do invoke instinctual fear and adrenaline when you see one.
