We got the music thread. What about movies?

What tugs at your heart strings?

For me it's the grey with Liam Neeson. I told my friend this and he just laughed at me thinking I was joking. Most people think this is just a movie about wolves and Liam Neeson kicking ass. This is one of my favorite and underrated movies.

Liam Neeson and Natasha Richardson were the right type of Hollywood couple. No drama, no short Las Vegas marriages, just good parents raising kids.

And then it ended.

Abruptly with a simple slip on a ski trip, Natasha died and Liam Neeson lost his wife of 15 years. She slipped and bumped her head. She got up and said she was okay, didn't want to mess up everyone's fun. And then 15 minutes later she went unconscious forever.

The grey isn't about fighting wolves. It's about the existential crisis of a man who is lonely and fighting depression and lost his reason for living. It's about Liam Neeson coming to terms with his wife's death.

The letter in the movie is written by Liam Neeson to Natasha.

That movie captures the depression and heartache of a man better than almost any movie I've ever seen.

Washed-up actor plays washed up wrestler trying to reclaim His Glory Days, his body abused, his face a post-surgical mess....

Mickey Rourke in The Wrestler is every fighter, athlete, and celebrity that tasted the top and then got chewed up and spit out hoping for the glory one more time. Even if it kills them.

Sean Penn never deserved that Oscar!

That movie captures the pain of a man forever trying to be validated as a man. Just wanting redemption.

Men don't fear their death as much as they fear loneliness and failure.

There's the obvious parallel that Mickey Rourke is acting all of his own internal demons. But I feel like it's a universal understanding amongst most men what he goes through that movie.

I choke up at old men crying:

Nolte trying to make amends after being a drunk gets me in Warrior.

Most just cheat on their wives.

I'm about to go full homo.
The chick-flick Up Close and Personal with Pfeiffer and Redford.
There's a scene at the end where Redford(journalist) gets shot & killed on-air while his wife Pfeiffer is watching from a party.
This was a cool story where a true hero of Hollywood in Redford, and virtuous vixen in Pfieffer entertained in a well directed quasi-character study.

Also to mind are Tears in the Rain, Rutger Hauer's infamous Blade Runner scene, & Covey leader and Raven's closing embrace in First Blood, first-rate acting on Stallone's side.

And who can forget Land before Time.

Jeebus, look what you've done to me.
I'm a wreck and my mascara's running.

We had a competition for reading books when I was in 4th or 5th grade. You would read the books and take a short quiz that essentially proved you read the book. How is powering through book after book and I was in first place.
The last book I read was this one. About a boy who loved his dogs. Another kid dies. Dogs die. Raccoons die.

I wasn't ready for it. I was just trying to get through the books.

I would come in second place in the book reading competition. Another kid was reading fluff and was able to get more points by the volume. But I read Where the Red Fern grows. I won.

This is a heart-wrenching movie about a couple who lose their son abruptly and it's tearing their marriage apart. It's the closest most accurate movie that explores the emotions of an Incredibly taboo topic. It'll make you want to hug your kids.
