You talking about inside heel hooks?

Very legal in mma and very legal in pretty much all of the sub only grappling tourneys.

I know that some bjj tourneys allow them in the black belt divisions.

You can't reap in a gi in any division per IBJJF (no heel hooks either)... Pro MMA it's allowed, not in Ammy (they make you wear shin pads, so it's easier to grip the foot)

Unlike most locks, heel hooks dont control your opponents body enough. You can slowly apply an armbar or shoulder lock as you control their body until your partner feels pain and taps, you let go, no worries go again. A proper heel hook though needs to be applied a lot faster as it's a lot easier to escape, on top of that, there is not a lot of buffer between when they start to feel pain and an injury is imminent. So if you're waiting to feel pain when someone is cranking a heel hook, good chance you'll end up injured-especially inverted as people are waiting for pain in their ankle, next thing they know all their knee ligaments are blown.

Bjj is made as a safe way to practice self defence techniques where no one (should) get hurt, but gains you the ability to really hurt someone in a confrontation outside of the gym.

MMA is that confrontation outside the gym, it's all about trying to hurt your opponent. So a lot more techniques are allowed: Neck cranks, biceps crushes, heel hooks etc and of course striking.

The problem with applying heel hooks is that most people don't know how to recognize how close they are to having their ankle or knee popped because they don't understand that not many nerves are impacted by the technique until the ligaments let go. But you can absolutely apply heel hooks slowly, and control the position. If you apply a heel hook explosively, you're more likely to give them the energy and space to escape.

I follow Dean Lister - "I always reap the knee, because it's proper technique"

It's illegal in BJJ tourneys for the same reason that 12-6 elbows are illegal in MMA.

I think the problem here is I'm bjj illiterate and watched a guy get disqualified for crossing his legs basically.

If I was going to list your problems “being bjj illiterate” would be like 82nd. Hell the bed-wetting doesn’t even break the top 20.

Is it as dangerous as IBJJF rules make it to be and have you ever seen it in a recent MMA fight?

Happened here but why is it considered an instant DQ in bjj tourneys while not even glanced at in MMA

Any scary knee reaping stories?
I believe as history goes, Brazilians looked down upon leg locks of any kind, considering them "dirty" and far more harmful than armbars/RNCs, etc. Eddie Bravo talked about it on Rogan's show, about 38:20 of this

When was the last time someone caught anyone with a heel hook and MMA? I am genuinely asking because I can't remember. I love leg locks.

they used to call Rener "sapateiro", IIRC.
It literally means shoemaker/cobbler, but to Brazilians it's like saying "women's shoe salesman" or "guy with foot fetish"

Just looked up Paul Harris's record to check, his last was on July 7 2017.

EDIT: and it was damn quick too;

Thanks Man!

I was hoping for someone besides the one guy who leg locks the shit out of everyone. Outside of Mr. Harris I think there has been probably one leg lock victory in the past ten years in a major promotion.

There has been more than one in the last 10 years.... From kneebars, calf crusher/slicer, toe holds, legs are being attacked (not just Achilles locks and heel hooks).

The reason why it doesn't happen more is because A) the gloves interfere with the grip on the lock, and B) focusing on foot attacks leave you open to get blasted in the face (see Arlovski vs Pe de Pano)

Thanks, I am very aware of all that. My point is that a lot of subs are disappearing (see another recent awesome thread someone posted) and leg locks are almost non-existent at this point in the major orgs.
