A little over a week ago, an announcement was made that Bellator and longtime color commentator Jimmy Smith had parted ways. Both sides stated the professional split was an amicable one, and word made its way around the various media outlets that Smith, long considered to be one of the best commentators in the industry, was being courted once again by the UFC.

This marks the second time Smith’s services have been sought after by the biggest promotion in the sport. About two ½ years ago, UFC lead color commentator Joe Rogan revealed to me during one of our interviews that he’d been actively trying to bring Jimmy over to Octagon-side, but…

great to hear

just wanted it to be official

He has passion for the sport....amazing fight recall....actual MMA fight experience...Less Ego than Joe

Could play multiple roles on a broadcast

I just like hearing MMA fighters commentate fights...they see a lot more than non MMA fighter commentators

Mir is a beast also, very good.

Of course MMA fighters see more than non-MMA fighters, but that extra insight can be negated by other deficiences.

They can also get too distracted, biased and opinionated. It's good to have a balanced broadcast.

agree
I just think rogan lacks this aspect. I hear it in Jimmy all the time.
Pat Militch is also rather excellent...and so is Frank Murr

It really shows his class that he went out of his way to speak well of Mauro and Goldie and defend them from detractors.

Jimmy is the man. I'm genuinely happy for him.

Side note: Bellator's commentary arrangement baffles me.

I bet they do have that in the back of their mind. Joe has been publicly hinting about
retiring from the UFC for a while now. What better replacement then his twin
I thought this made it pretty obvious:
"There are two things I want to make really clear. I’m not replacing Joe Rogan. Joe is still active with the UFC this year, so it’s not like I’m coming in and he’s leaving."

Till August anyway.

And let’s face it, they could replace joe with jimmy, not say anything about it at all and 80% of the viewers wouldn’t even notice.

As nice as this guy is apparently and as friendly as he has been to this site in the past, there is no one who can replace joe Rogan......no one.
It will not be as good to me when Rogan leaves.....that’s my opinion.

Joe is the best.....he has his weak moments with wannabes like Rousey but he’s 95% all good in my book........
