That is awesome, passing is one of the hardest parts of the game, to this day it's what I struggle with the most in matches, drill drill drill it, and right when you start feeling really comfortable with it.... Keenan will come up with something new everyone will do LOL.

Truth is, the basic concepts have always worked... Keep good posture and base, pass over or under your opponents legs, break their grips and clear your hips..... everything else you'll figure as you go

This is what i have come to realise too.

When i watch high level BJJ a lot of the passes i see are the ones we learn from day one. It's just the efficiency and timing on these techniques are different.

I guess i need to start chaining up my passes now, you rarely ever pass someone good on the first attempt, rather you might catch him on your 4th or 5th try.

Exactly this. You will go a long way Grappling with “just the basics”, particularly when you start to realize what passes chain together well and start your first pass with a plan for how to react when your attempt gets countered.

You ever have that night in class, where you get smashed by a 250 lb black belt.... And loved every second of it?

Where should I hide my feet when playing this kind of open guard?

Hip/Thigh/Knee control or control the inside position with your hooks or shin frame/knee shield (especially when you angle on your side). You saw how he was stepping in trying to pass your guard? If he was a better guard passer, or was allowed to attack more that the straight ankle lock, you would have had a hell of a day. If they step in that deep and can control your knee, the can set up that ashi garami very fast and start that leg lock game.

What up Playa's??? Who is working on something new? I've been simplifying the thought process of Jiu Jitsu for my team and it seems to be working.

Not exactly new, but working hard on shoring up my half guard sweeps.

Been messing around with the lapel lately.
Lasso lapel, thread through opponents leg, technical stand up, some times i get the sweep other times i dont but no one is formally teaching me the lapel stuff I'm just playing with it for fun.

I've noticed now that the leg drag is pretty much a pass that can be hit from most guards/positions, so I'm working on that also

What are some options for defending against a guard pass where I'm on my back open guard and they get grips on my inner knee area and "turn the wheel" to end up in side control or north south? I don't know how else to word it lol. Last night I got caught twice and my only thought is to just be first so they can't get grips.

Are you referring to the toreando pass (bullfighter pass), or the variant where they get the pant grips you describe and walk wide around your legs while pushing your knees to the opposite side from the side they are passing on?

Toreando, yes exactly. Sorry I wasn't sure if that term was included with inside pants grips.

Of you can keep the guy from getting grips, or break them very quickly, then you can pretty much keep this pass from happening- but that is much easier said than done. Once they start passing, my favorite thing to try is a lapel drag. Pushing their head to the side they are passing on and scooting to square back up with them can help you reguard. Once they are past your legs, you have a shot to bring your farside foot to their hip and reguard that way, shrimp and turn towards them, or turn away and turtle.

I think I follow but not 100% here. Can you explain using left and right hands as if I was on my back and they were passing to my left?

I’ll try. There are some good videos of these defenses that I will post when i am home after training tonight.
Guy starts passing to your left, and it’s too late to try to break grips. Reach up with your left hand, grab his left lapel, and pull like you are starting a huge snowblower while scootIng your hips to your right. Passer will either faceplant, or post one or both hands. If you do this at the perfect time they will be on all fours and you have an easy back take.
If you are too late to try the collar drag, or this is no-gi, push their head to the ground by our left hip with your right hand while you scoot to your right.

I did not mention that you need to sit-up ASAP when someone starts threatening this pass. The two defenses above require you to be sitting up, but if they have their hands on your knees there should be nothing preventing you from sitting up.

Prefect man, appreciate you posting that .I love the cross grip lapel drag and have good success with it so to make it a same side to defend the toreando should be a easy adjustment. I hope I'm reading that right lol.

Little things like this make such a difference, thanks again.

Like doc said try not to let them get those grips or break them straight away

If someone grabs both my legs, or both pant grips, ill try break them straight away.

if i can't break the grip i turn towards the side they are going to toreando me and get my frames ready.

Bring your knees to your chest, frame and face towards them. Works for me at times

One of our purple belts is built like a tank and he likes to use the pressure variant of that pass and it is VERY hard to stop. Lanky guys like you are so far away when they do that pass it is hard to connect with them to defend.
