Project Spearhead hopes to gather authorization cards from a minimum 150 fighters in the UFC, then have the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) determine whether UFC fighters are employees or independent contractors. If they are considered employees, a vote will be held, and if the majority of UFC fighters are in favor of Project Spearhead, they will be able to unionize.

On the Project Spearhead interim executive board, Iaquinta joins UFC lightweight Kajan Johnson, the interim vice president, and labor lawyer Lucas Middlebrook, best known as Nick Diaz’s attorney in his 2015 marijuana case.

Iaquinta faces Paul Felder at UFC 223 on April 7 in Brooklyn, New York.

Al Iaquinta joins unionization effort as interim secretary and treasurer

This makes my day! Iaquinta just strong-armed the UFC into renegotiating his contract and then he gets on board with Project Spearhead to form a fighters' union. He has made no public comment on the situation yet, though.

Yeeeeeeeaaah!! How do ya like that, Dana?

This reminded me that they need a certain percentage of union cards, right? Do you think that's why they have increased the roster so drastically?

Appreciate everyone that posts an article. Makes life easier. Sorry I don't catch duplicates sometimes. If you could format them the way I have edited the OP, it makes promoting them to an article much easier. Pic at top, text of article below the pic, then link, then comments below the link. No need to make the text italics. Thanks.

Firstly, respect to Iaquinta.

Iaquinta is obviously smarter than he comes across, but as a general rule, you don't make a real estate salesman with no experience secretary and treasurer of a union. You would've thought this was one role where a non-fighter would've been fine, even if you want to stock the board ranks with fighters

It may be a mistake to put someone so aggressively antagonistic towards the UFC in that role so early, but they've got to do it at some stage.

Secretary tresasurer and all officers of a union have to come from within the proposed bargaining unit in the early days of formation unless you affiliate with a larger administrative apparatus. There is no board like in corporate analogues. Following actual certification, they would hold formal elections for officers. The biggest problem is going to be getting member authorization cards filled out just so they can move to reclassify their employment status with the National labor relations board. That will be most of the job of the secretary at this point.

Informative post. But is there any reason they couldn't have just got someone with more relevant skills from the beginning?

Just can't work like that. I guess they could have found a fighter with a union organizing or officer background if there are some, but Iaquinta's profile helps. The title is pretty meaningless at this point. Probably just wants it for LinkedIn.

Shouldn't the secretary know how to read? (I am just assuming he is illiterate).
