On Thursday, officials announced that Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza and Kelvin Gastelum will fight at UFC 224, which takes place at the Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro on May 12.

This will be Souza’s second booking of 2018. In January, he needed less than a round to defeat Derek Brunson by TKO in the main event of UFC on FOX 27. It was the second time that “Jacare” finished Brunson with strikes. The 38-year-old Brazilian owns an 8-2 UFC record, with his only losses coming at the hands of Whittaker and potential No. 1 contender Yoel Romero.

During a recent appearance on The MMA Hour, Romero claimed that UFC president Dana White told him he is next in line for a shot at Whittaker’s title.

Gastelum, 26, is 4-1 with one no-contest competing at 185 pounds. The Ultimate Fighter 17 winner bounced back from a loss to Chris Weidman in spectacular fashion, knocking out former middleweight champion Michael Bisping in 2:30 to close out UFC Shanghai last November.

Also scheduled for the show is a middleweight matchup between Brazilian legends Vitor Belfort and Lyoto Machida.

See the updated UFC 224 card below:

Vitor Belfort vs. Lyoto Machida

Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza vs. Kelvin Gastelum

Davi Ramos vs. Nick Hein

Alberto Mina vs. Ramazan Emeev

Alexey Oleynik vs. Junior Albini

Cezar Ferreira vs. Karl Roberson

This will be on the same night as Bellator King Mo vs. Ryan Bader final HW tourny quarterfinal.
Not surprised they're beefing it up.

4 heavyweights, 3 light heavyweights, and 1 middleweight...
Bellator's "heavyweight" grand prix
I like it personally. We get to see a speed advantage vs a size advantage in the same weight class. It's a throwback, there can be 60lbs weight difference so skill and game plan plays a real factor.

Melvin manhoef was this first to splat mark hunt. This is a much shorter weigh difference

They should have called it an openweight grand prix and it would have been fine, but I guess that's not as sexy as heavyweight(even if it's inaccurate :/ )

Who are you talking to?

2 way past it and shot brazillians that have the potential to put on a very very dull fight over what could be a barnburner. Surely...
These placements are ultimately decided by a bunch of actors?

Looks like Weidman is going down the old 'even though I got knocked out 3 times in a row and nearly got KOd by a welterweight, I'm gonna sit out a year while other guys book fights and wait for Romero or Whittaker to get/stay injured and fight for a belt' route.

The sad thing is, Weidman's strategy is far more likely to get him a shot than the winner of this fight.

Gastelum surprises me all the time. He just looks like a fat boy, but he can fight his ass off. He's one of those tweeners, stuck between 185 and 170.

Actually open weight would have been inaccurate since everyone is weighing in at 207lbs+

Looks a little desperate to me. Isn't that a little bit fooling the harcdcore fans who know better?
To be fair hardcores would also know that Mo is 9-1 at heavyweight and Rampage hasn’t fought at 205 since May 2014

Oh, in Bellator?

Yeah but that's because...

He started as a heavyweight in sengoku. Won the Rizin heavyweight tournament a couple years ago. He has a few wins in Bellator including one over Kongo.

Seriously? Jesus, WME must just be looking for a reason to cut KG. Jacare by whatever he wants, whenever he wants. Lead the sheep to the slaughter.

But, I'll still watch.

Kelvin could box him up on the feet and use his wrestling to stay up

Same night as Canelo vs GGG cable replay and Lomachenko's next fight too.

MMA is gonna get fucked over. They say Bellator did low numbers last time because of the winter olympics now imagine this.

Wow, that sucks.
I'll be at Bellator, I can't imagine they'd want to go big with this card considering.
Maybe they'll throw in Pico and Josh Thomson, bay area guys.
