I just wish they would drop the number of PPV's to 6-8 a year and stack the shit out of them. I don't even wanna think twice about whether or not it's worth the $...it should be a resounding "YES"!

Upping the price in the midst of a run of shitty PPV's (on paper) is a WTF? moment too. Fuckers.

Dana always wanted to shift MMA away from being a WWE-type spectacle to a sport like boxing...and he's finally succeeded. Boxing has maybe 3 certified PPV stars, and some of the best fights that end up on PPV sell poorly. Guys like MM aren't going to put up big PPV numbers, but Anderson Silva wasn't a PPV star until Chael Sonnen made him look human. Ward-Kovalev were great fights between the best P4P boxer in the world and a monster who was almost his equal, they were relevant to the sport, but not to the casual fan who'll buy a Floyd or Canelo fight.

We're getting Stipe-DC soon. If promoted right, it should be a big seller.

I think Holloway, and Ortega are marketable as hell also.

I honestly think the next real surge in popularity will come when/if we get a more competitive field of heavyweights. Same as in boxing, I think casual fans want to think the are seeing the biggest “most dangerous men” on the planet. Even a rivalry like Sylvia/Arlovski did a lot to attract casual interest. Good or bad for the sport Brock Lesnar brought them in. A marketable heavyweight champ is big business.

The sport has never been better.

The UFC has a dominant HW champion who takes care of business in the cage and didn't need cynical matchmaking and ethnic pandering to get there.

Anderson ran the Matrix over a shallow MW division (apart from Hendo and Vitor), but how would he do against: Romero, Whittaker, Jacare, Rockhold, Gastulem? Not so great, considering that his 2x conqueror Chris Weidman isn't really in the picture anymore.

LW/FW are fucking stacked. A far cry from the days when BJ Penn would beat up on Some-Guy-From-TUF-Who-Dropped-a-Division

Also, PPV isn't really dying: UFC 222 with Cyborg in a squash did about as many sales as Couture-Liddell 2, and 5 of the top 10 all time UFC PPV happened in 2015 and 2016

They could use better hype shows. This Hollywood agency sucks at promotion. They should show the BJ Penn-GSP 2 hype show to the marketing department.
I didn't read any of this, but it's good to see Bobby Lupo here.

People have been saying MMA/UFC is dying forever. It's a running gag on some forums.

Back in 2013 people said it was dying because GSP retired and Anderson lost twice and broke his leg, then McGregor and Rousey became the biggest stars the sport has ever had.

Eventually we'll see some new fighters people don't know about yet(or maybe we already have them, but they just havnt hit their stride) come along and take the sport by storm.

It's happened before it'll happen again.

Lupo's the clear MVP of the UG the past handful of years. All we need is a couple of super-knowledgeable guys like wiggum to put this place over the top.

I don't see 1 million buys for a UFC ppv in the next 2 years unless it's headlined by Conor.
2 years is a long time in combat sports. McGregor went from debuting to selling 1mil ppvs in about 2 years. I don't think it's likely but you can't rule these things out.

In 2014, UFC supposedly died
Then it had its three biggest profit years with each year doing better.

Anybody that follows prize fighting knows it is not a sport that lives & dies yearly.
Boxing died after Ali ... then there was Tyson ... etc & etc

When people say the sport is dying, they're not talking about the objective quality of fights, they're talking about the interest and money generated in the sport, which has undoubtedly taken a hit with the absence of big names like Ronda, Brock, Conor, JBJ, etc.

Saying the sport is dying is moronic hyperbole, but it has dropped down.

right, this and also the 'user experience' of being a fan has declined, especially for longtime fans. There used to be far more 'stacked' events, with more style contrasts. You have to work harder these days to get the quality now that there's so much dilution. It's hard to get excited about 'tattooed wrestle-boxer vs. tattooed wrestle-boxer' sandwiched between 2 low-level WMMA fights in order to get to the 2 or 3 interesting fights on the card.

The apologists call people who complain about this 'lazy', but WTF does work ethic have to do with being a fan?

"People who don't agree with me are ridiculous" That's what this whole thing reads like.

Absolutely.

Agreed. But I guess with the new fans, they'd have no history with the sport and how it was. Fair enough.

Are they call them ridiculous. It's just not a valid argument when you start with ad hominem.
