Although CM Punk's UFC debut didn't go as planned, he is set to return to the Octagon.

In response to a user on Twitter on Monday, the former WWE star confirmed his next match will be June 9:

As TMZ Sports noted, this is the date of UFC 225 in Chicago, which happens to be his hometown. Punk has only one career UFC fight on his resume, a first-round submission loss to Mickey Gall at UFC 203 in 2016.

Punk first raised speculation about competing in this event when the UFC announced it in February:

Ariel Helwani of MMA Fighting then reported he was in discussions for a matchup against Mike Jackson, although there was no final decision on the matter.

Fittingly enough, Jackson is also 0-1 in his UFC career, with his loss coming in a first-round submission to Gall at UFC Fight Night 82.

Punk is likely hoping to rehabilitate his image as a fighter, but at 39 years old, his age could be a factor as much as his inexperience in the Octagon.

The fan favorite could be enough to draw a lot of viewers to the upcoming pay-per-view, however.

Isn't Mike what's his name the reporter? He got his ass kicked then went back to his laptop and continued reporting?

The pantomime continues... The Superbowl of mma with 0-1 Vs 0-1

Agree. Fame comes from the fans though.
Hard to argue that people like him. I haven’t met any MMA fans who would pay to see him tho. Only the WWF population. I respect that he has the balls to give it a shot, but can’t help but to be pissed about it too. I’m generally all for the freak show shit, but this one irks me. If he would fight Bob Sapp or Jose Canseco on New Years Eve in Japan i would have less of a problem with it.

Lol at those match ups, he'd get killed! Hey I'm not a huge fan of the guy bit from what little I've seen he's entertaining and has a big following for whatever reason .

MMAHAWK @MMAHAWK and I went to the UFC expo a few years ago and he was the Q&A quest. I never really heard or seen him before but he was pretty funny IIRC. Handled some retards pretty well.

That is the entire point that people seem to miss. They are not using Punk to sell tickets to MMA fans, we're already watching. They are using him to pull some $ out of WWE fans that only tune in for the Brocks and the Punks.

Fan favorite? That seems a bit presumptuous. Aren’t most of us ready for him to be done with MMA and go rassle or something?
It is in Chicago
He will be the biggest gate draw by far
Plus he meant a lot of PPV buys the last time
I doubt he will mean as much again, but he will earn his money & bring eyeballs to the card.
How he does this time? Can't be that much worse than the last ;)

I don't want to hear anyone *cough cough Joe Rogan or anyone else ever shit on Bellator or Japan for their so called freak show fights, Now that the UFC is giving a guy who is obviously not an Elite fighter another fight after being humiliated in his first MMA fight ever. ..

I respect Punk for wanting to pursue a MMA career and become a fighter ...but the UFC is suppose to be the pinnacle of MMA and he does not belong in the UFC. (Not his fault - he is just taking advantage of the opportunity, but shame on Zuffa - WME - IMG)

Punk about to get brutally KO'd in front of what fans he has left in Chi-Town.

*How is he even sanctioned to fight? If you followed his Pro-Wrestling Career in the WWE you would be aware of his multiple concussions he complained about...with so much head trauma in the past - add in his age ...I really don't see how he can be sanctioned to fight.

Too bad UFC never embraced the freak show angle that Pride was able to capitalize on. In their quest to legitimize the MMA reputation to compete and ultimately conquer boxing in the ratings, they lost sight of their carny freak show roots. Why not have Giants vs Smaller/ skilled opponents. Remember the days of no weight divisions? Surely there must be an mma trained midget who would be willing to fight an athelete-- perhaps professional. Why not let the trannies in on it too? MMA can be pretty boring sometimes.
