In 2014, UFC supposedly died
Then it had its three biggest profit years with each year doing better.

Anybody that follows prize fighting knows it is not a sport that lives & dies yearly.
Boxing died after Ali ... then there was Tyson ... etc & etc
I didn't mean dying. I meant someone other than McGregor selling 1mil ppvs. Of course the sport won't die, combat sports is as old as time.

I wasn't really referring to your post, but used your post to show things are cyclical in combat sports.
I mean in 2014, nobody would guess UFC would be worth $5b+ now & making the money they are

"People who don't agree with me are ridiculous" That's what this whole thing reads like.

Absolutely.

Agreed. But I guess with the new fans, they'd have no history with the sport and how it was. Fair enough.

Are they call them ridiculous. It's just not a valid argument when you start with ad hominem.
pretty sure that's just Lupo stirring up some conversation (the 'ridiculous' part).

I DGAF about the UFC's finances, I'm not getting a piece, so it means nothing if a PPV sells 200 or 2 million to me. I've been a fan since 1995. Go back and watch some of those old UFCs, they're fucking brutal and hard to get through, even if they were fun at the time. The quality of fighter has gone up exponentially. It used to be if a BJJ guy got a fight to the ground, it was over; now almost everyone has enough sub defense to keep the fight going. The average fighter can compete in multiple ranges, we don't have to watch entire cards of lay and pray, striking has evolved immensely.

MMA hipsters should have to watch Miletich-Burnett before talking about the good old days. I remember how things were, and they weren't always great.

ah, c'mon - Shamrock-Severn 2 was an avant-garde masterpiece, the 4'33" of combat sport!

When people say the sport is dying, they're not talking about the objective quality of fights, they're talking about the interest and money generated in the sport, which has undoubtedly taken a hit with the absence of big names like Ronda, Brock, Conor, JBJ, etc.

Saying the sport is dying is moronic hyperbole, but it has dropped down.
But they are making more money than ever before even though no one is watching and they have no stars.i read it on the internet

How did you ever make it through and become a fan if they were so bad. Revisionist bullshit, that is what I smell. Sorry for being ridiculous but I disagree. The cards are lesser these days, it's easy for me to skip a few. Is it truly on a decline? I do not believe so either, but let's not pretend we live in a golden age. Quantity does not mean quality.

Good to see you on here by the way.

Stipe-DC is coming up. That's one of, if not the best HW fights the UFC has ever made.
Khabib-Tony is a going to be a LW war. Conor-the winner of that is going to be huge.
Orgeta put the stamp on my boy Frankie, and now it looks like we'll see Holloway-Ortega
Mighty Mouse and TJ Dillashaw are going to fight.
Nate-Woodley is going to be interesting to a lot of people
Bobby Knuckles and Romero are going to do it again
Rockhold is trying to talk his way into a fight with Gustaffson
Jones and Brock will be back by the end of the year..fighting each other

The UFC is putting on good fights in spite of themselves. The organization is awful. It's almost as if they're afraid to make stars because the investment is heavy, and those stars can break away/self destruct like Brock, Ronda, Bones, Conor

I'm not convinced that the UFC under Zuffa was terribly concerned about the legitimacy of title fights. Brock was 1-1 in the UFC and got a title fight against a 621-year-old Randy Couture. Dan Hardy got a title shot against GSP. Did anybody in the world believe that Dan Hardy was the second best Welterweight in the world, and a worthy challenger. Andrei Arlovski defended against Paul Buentello and Justin Eilers. WTF kind of nonsense was that?

The UFC is far from perfect, but it always has been more spectacle than sport. This is nothing new. The only new wrinkle has been the advent of the money fight dream.
True and Zuffa was far from legit. Problem is and always will be their lack of promoting fighters except for a few. You shouldnt wait for a conor type person to come out, you should create stars, almost like the WWE. Shove the fighters down their throats and see who the crowd eventually turns too and who they hate and boom you win right there.

This is what they did with Ronda and many hated them for it.

I know when you say "Zuffa" you mean Lorenzo-era, but factually it is still Zuffa.
WME & investors bought Zuffa LLC which owned 90% of UFC.
That is why Dana had to sell his 9% & then buy-in again (6-7%) since he was part of Zuffa LLC.

Re: WWE
They haven't built a big star in over 10 years (since Cena).
One that increases ratings/gates

but as Wild @Wild & I have discussed in various threads, it is shocking how little WME does with fighters as far as Hollywood goes.
That should be easy, but it proves that Ari & crew are not involved in the day to day as much as some think they are.

It seems WME makes the big corporate decisions & everything else is Dana & team

The reason the wwf stopped producing stars is because over the last 10 years they have really lost their way and have gone in a direction that just confuses me on every turn.

They caught shit for doing it with Ngannuu.

Toughest thing in MMA is fighters rarely fight. It is tough to build a fanbase when you only fight once-twice a year & usually on PPV.
I thought with WME connections they would be all over talk shows & have more TV dedicated to top fighters, but we haven't seen it.

But they have tried
The last 5 years they have tried to make Roman Reigns the biggest star since Rock & failed.
I agree with you, but if you look at the last 3 major stars, Vince really didn't create anything
1. Austin: Vince had him in a non-speaking, mid-card role
2. Rock: Smiling babyface that was boo'd out of buildings
3. Cena: It took Cena rapping backstage for Vince to take notice (weird since Cena is jacked) & they ran with the rap gimmick, bc (Vince voice) "people hate rap" ... Cena became a babyface for it & they ran with it

Last three superstars made it despite Vince

Weird how he is both a genius & a bad judge of talent together lol

Amazing to me that they don’t have celebs like Mark Walhberg pimping the UFC every chance they get. Tweeting about it, attending fights and doing interviews with them during the broadcast, doing little 5 minute Embedded type series of celebs telling stories about what they love about the UFC and broadcastig them during fight week, asking them to wear UFC t-shirts out in public wear paparazzi will snap a shot of it, etc. Utilize the resources readily available to help get the word out.

Great example. They pushed roman so hard the fans hated him, they even got sick of Cenas act. Vince forgot how to use people and make them stars and forgot how to push the brand. HHH imo is doing good with what he is doing but overall WWE is a thing of the past. Its greatest days are far behind them. Raw is War was just insane nightly, now its terrible all the time. Wreslters look like regular people who dont even look tough, there gimmicks are just terrible and kayfabe is gone and turns it into a joke. So much of what i loved about wrestling has been over since probably 2007-2008.

HHH is a fan of "pro wrestling" mixed with "sports entertainment". I have high hopes for him taking over.
Vince hates wrestling

Expand on Vince hates wresting please. I don’t keep up with WWE but that’s an interesting statement.

He mandates that none of his wrestlers are called "wrestler".
He refuses to let announcers use the term "wrestler"
Anytime WWE is called "wrestling", he immediately says "No we are Sports Entertainment"
