To move stuff overseas?
Planning a move, not anytime soon but want plenty of time to get our ducks in a row.

Looking into the logistics of moving our household in a shipping container, 20' or 40'.

Wondering about the costs, it's really hard to get definitive quotes without measuring every item you own.

Anybody here ever had any experience with this?

silentsinger @silentsinger how did you make the move?
My best advice, is to get 3 people in to do quotes, don't go with the cheapest and read a fuck load of yelp reviews.

Get them to do a full itinerary quotation and make them stick to it rather than an estimate. Make them stick to all possible taxes. That's on them, not you.

If you have any specific questions, let me know.

When I say full itinerary quotation, I mean down to a bookshelf. And make sure they bubble wrap the fuck out of everything rather than blankets. I've had fucking nightmares.

I can't stress enough. Get it in writing that it's a final binding quote with no eventualities. If anything goes wrong, that's them out of pocket, not you .

Dis you take everything or discard a lot of shit and replaced it when you arrived?

We understand we are going to be discarding most of our electronics and power tools because of us running on 110v and them on 220v

I bought transformers for TVs, ditched kitchen appliances, hair dryers, stuff like that.

Good to know. What outfit did you use? I' waiting on quotes from about 10 different companies. I think it'd be feasible for us to go with an outfit we can pack/unpack ourselves. There isn't any
Value for these moving companies to fill containers up to capacity

I can’t remember the name of the company who moved me from holland to the us but it was a full pack and move service, down to a glass.

Make sure they come in and do a scope of everything though, you’ll end up having a financial argument otherwise.

By that, I mean at the end where you can see all of your stuff and they’re pretty much holding it to ransom.

I know I'm harping on, but check the small print. I've just put in a 3.5k claim from VA to CA and they've offered me $77. I'm too overloaded with other stuff to argue it at the moment, but I will.

Dont think have a choice but to go with an outfit that lets us pack. We need to time things properly as we will need to sell our house. Packing ourselves we can slowly start putting stuff in boxes rather than suddenly have everything gone which would probably have a significant impact on the young one.

Check your insurance with that. I've had people pack for me 3 times now because then it's on them rather than you. As much as I'm still in a bit of a situation with them.

If you pack and something breaks, it's on you.

Did your husband have you shipped over in a crate?

If I ever get quotes back I'll be able to make a more informed decision. These outfits don't give you too many details and none of them have rates.
Another thing, it's bloody difficult to find discussion about this.

My friend just did this moving back from the Virgin Islands. Her choices were probably limited there. However, she packed, they sent truck to take to shipyard. Trucking company here delivered it to her door. Her's went well. I hope yours does, too.

How about packing a pod and see about shipping that? Or are you not shipping that much?

Give me a shout if you get stuck.
Mother-in-law works in international freight/logistics out of Auckland.

One of our companies in Sydney is logistics based too - we use DB Schenker and have 4x 40 foot on the go at the moment.

Good to know. We will moving to Christchurch initially, property is available us whenever we choose.
I imagine most if not all shipments arrive in Auckland possibly some in wellington and then freight to wherever from there?
