I reckon in less than a week I could write the bare bones of a program using the planes current sensor array that turns on a big red flashy light that stops this from happening ever again

I have made some reallllly expensive fuck ups in my career. Nothing that big though. Can you sack people from the military?
I just read it again, I'm sure part of his checklist will include retracting the landing gear when he gets to a certain altitude and is leaving the pattern, his only defense is if the gear malfunction I guess. There are a bunch of microswitches on gear that indicate it's travel position and fully locked up/down state, and I'm 99% certain he will get a warning if he's below a certain altitude with his gear stowed. Will be interesting to see the official explanation.

I bet they blame maintenance

If they dont double up their sensors or have reverse logic on the position then they are retarded. Or use sensors at all, an encoder, resolver or a combo of sensors and those is a much better option

UPDATE from sources: "Info on the Raptor mishap at Fallon: The slide happened on takeoff. Appears to have been a left engine flameout when the pilot throttled up to take off. By the time he realized the engine was dead, he had already been airborne for a few seconds and raised the gear. The jet bounced for around 1500 feet, and then slide for about 5000 feet. They got it off the ground and on its landing gear last night, so the runway is clear. Chain is wanting it to be quiet still. It's very fresh obviously. But it's looking like the second engine failure on Elmo jets in a 7 day period."

His gear should have stayed down until he was clear I'm sure
