I don't think she has to be. UFC cut them because they commanded high salaries but utilized a style that didn't draw as well as they wanted. When they got the chance to get rid they did.

That's what I don't like about the whole UFC fighters are independent contractor bullshit. If that's the case they should have just as much right to end the contract as the UFC does.
Legally, an employer may require independent contractor's to wear Reebok. (a related tangent)

The idiots going around saying only employees may wear uniforms, that's BS. It's a contractual matter.
If the contract calls for specific attire, and both parties agree - done deal.

Legal Consequences of Requiring Independent Contractors to Wear Uniforms

I get what sparkuri @sparkuri is saying, that all fighters deserve to get promoted so that they have the opportunity to make as much money as they possibly can but that's not how reality works
But that's not what I'm saying.
As stated up there^^ somewhere, I think it's about Project Spearhead.

Leslie Smith might not be the big name to command extra promotion, but there are and have been thousands of fighters who have been, and the UFC puts their promotional efforts behind a small few.

Interesting Blubba Jenkins @Blubba Jenkins is alluding to her being a "pawn", I think she's alluding to them ALL being pawns...

At least half the roster fall into that category.

You want to be a success in prize fighting? Fight your way out of the bottom half - into the upper echelon.

Leslie Smith has been given a title shot FFS.

What category are you referring to?

Success in the UFC generally goes like this.

1. Be pretty.
2. Be attractive to the market we want.
3. Do what we say and don't complain.
4. Win

In that order.

There are hundreds of examples.
It's not about fighting your way to the "upper echelon", it's about playing the game first and foremost.
Opportunity knocks when you make a door, and that's what Leslie is attempting, and I and others applaud her for it.
I actually love it.

You need both. Gotta be an elite fighter & have what you described to have any longevity.

Half the roster will never be elite fighters. Leslie Smith is bottom 20%, ugly as sin, anti-company, and old.

Sorry man
I kinda addressed what you meant in my post anyways
I agree it is playing a part, they won't promote those people unless they absolutely have to

They are all pawns in UFC eyes imo

The risk behind promoting every fighter is the fallout percentage. Therefore wasted marketing dollars. A typical business strategy is to put your marketing money towards your best sellers....then your target market comes for the best sellers, but also gets exposed to possible emerging products. It's that exposure that leads to something being successful and marketable....but that takes time.

Put it this way, would you buy a ppv because Leslie was on it?

No me neither. Just the way it goes. You earn the promotion, you dont deserve it.

Another obscure statistic that means nothing in relation to marketability or self-worth.
So you don’t think if the ufc wanted to they couldn’t promote her?

Give me Vin Raines voice
“Leslie Smith, victorious in 3 of her last 4 bouts. Her only loss when she challenged herself against a human Cyborg. The most accurate power puncher in the game steps back into the cage and looks to continue her record breaking stat against the young up and coming undefeated Aspen Ladd.”

By the end of the week casuals would think she’s Ronda 2.0

I'd love to side with her, but the fact is the UFC is just not great at promoting fighters. They can put the rocket boosters on "sure things" like Conor, Brock and Ronda, but most fighters are left to promote themselves. The UFC struggle to properly promote their p4p #1 MM, for fucks sake.

Leslie has to be realistic: like the guy on Twitter said she's 35 with a 10-7 record. Rack up some wins and try to move up in the rankings and get a title shot.

She already was gifted 1 title shot and got knocked the fuck out.

Yeah that was just Cyborg's "welcome to the ufc" fight, which really couldn't have gone any better for Cyborg or worse for Smith.

She fought for an Invicta title years ago against Barb Honchak but I think that's it

We've seen her ceiling. Investing in her is a dumb business move.

Big fan of Leslie's. Smart chic that isn't afraid to stand up for something she's feels passionately about. Fighters have needed a seat at the table for a long time. She's trying to help facilitate that. I support it.

Literally one of the only fighters (man or woman) who doesn't
just roll over and tuck tail for Egg and company. All these tough
guys on the Roster and the person leading the charge to break the
UFC's mistreatment of fighters is a woman.

Then no one supports her, including a lot of fans.

And people wonder why their is no orginization for fighters and the UFC runs
wild doing whatever they want, promoting fighters that can't fuckin fight and putting
on the most ridiculous "Championship" bouts that Titles are literally a joke now

The UFC could promote the shit out of me, but that doesn't mean shit.

She is an average fighter in a weak division....why waste the marketing money?

I support Leslie in fighting the good fight for the fighters, but I just don't see her being a champion or a draw.

She's a solid journey-woman IMO
