Right before his UFC 224 fight against Ronaldo Souza, Kelvin Gastelum wanted nothing but a convincing win, specifically a first-round knockout. For him, this was the only way he should be granted the next shot at the UFC’s middleweight title.

Gastelum did end up with a split-decision victory over the number two-ranked Jacare. Now, the 26-year-old TUF 17 alum says he would not be accepting any other fight unless it would be for the 185-pound title.

“I definitely feel like a title shot should be next,” Gastelum during the UFC 224 post-fight press conference. “I don’t think I’d accept any other fight than the…

But looking at his last 6 fights he's 5-1 with legends on his resume.

Well considering he knocked out the GOAT MW (Bisping) and then beating Jacare i would say he deserves the next shot. There is nobody else.

he could probably get one people get injured all the time and they might need him to step in or maybe the other contenders don't come to an agreement st the bargaining table and he has to step in.

Weidman starched him 3 fights ago... he's got 2 great wins in a row so maybe
Chris was able to overwhelm him over time due his size and wrestling but it wasnt a starching IMO. Some nice gifs of Kelvin making the former champ look to be not so out of his league .

I was thinking about this as well. Reminds me of how Jones came in at such the perfect time how his opponents were still on top bit all fading. Add that to his skill set and youth he ended up cleaning them all out. Yes Kelvin isn't Jon, not saying that he is but their timing into their divisions has helped for sure.

I don't know if he has the clout to be saying that shit. He's on a two fight win streak and IMO he got a gift vs Jacare on Saturday.

Who would you give next title fight to?

Souza and Rockhold are both coming off losses and Weidmans last fight was over Kelvin but that was a year ago, I'm not even sure if he's recovering from something or what.

Kelvin has to be next. Has Woodley ever expressed interesrt in moving up because now would be a good time imo.

Good time for sure. MW is in desperate need of some young talent to keep the division rolling along. Woodley could beat the same guys Kelvin has I bet.

If im wonderboy im moving to MW, he aint getting a rematch with Woodley and he has already beaten the MW champ which imo helps his chances of getting a title shot at MW even sooner.

I actually think Jacare won the fight. It was even going into round 3, and Jacare edged that round 2. Jacare was more tired, which fooled the judges, you can be more tired but still do more than the other guy, and it was super close, not a robbery but wrong guy got the win. I don't blame Kelvin for wanting the title shot, if you are most fighters that is what you dedicate everything too, but I don't think he won his last fight and sucks to see Jacare continually put back in the que.

He beat Yoel but got screwed by the judges, then Yoel pops for a substance on top of that. Then he gets ko'd by Whitaker, happens, comes back and now has this bs.

Then, you figure he would have had and probably been the MW champ if Bisping was not allowed to have 2 money fights with Hendo and GSP.

Jacare deserves to have the UFC mw belt, guy is one of the best MW's ever. NoDoubt

Yeah Kelvin is next. It would be Weidman if Weidman had won even one fight since his win over Gastelum, but the Chris just hasn't been active enough.

I get that it's a shallow division at this point and Kelvin has a great argument for the next shot, I just don't think he's that strong of a name or challenger that he can say "title shot or go fuck yourself", especially after getting a very fortunate decision.

When you look at the rankings it really is a dogshit division.

If you wanted to give the UFC an enema, you'd stick the hose in the MW division at this point.

Weidman got KO'd 3 in a row and Kelvin is a WW who can't stop eating so he had to move up a division. It's really sad.

He doesnt deserve it because he cant beat a top fighter. He lost to Romero, lost to an undersized MW in Kelvin and got knocked out by Whittaker. He needs to beat a top guy and i dont see him doing that when he was gassed after 1 round against a welterweight.
