They were updated in 2017 to focus on impact(damage), dominance and duration when it comes to striking as well as emphasizing striking and grappling above aggression and then octagon control

"Effective Striking/Grappling shall be considered the first priority of round assessments. Effective Aggressiveness is a ‘Plan B’ and should not be considered unless the judge does not see ANY advantage in the Effective Striking/Grappling realm. Cage/Ring Control (‘Plan C’) should only be needed when ALL other criteria are 100% even for both competitors. This will be an extremely rare occurrence"

Thanks.

I'm in a quandary as to who won now. Till got the knockdown but it's all a bit hazy now.

I think you're missing the phrase "exactly equal". The striking wasn't exactly equal so aggression & octagon control shouldn't factor in according to the new judging criteria.
In round 4, after rewatching, counting and weighing every shot that landed, I saw it as equal.

The number of jabs and low round kicks were 100% equal from what I saw and when you factor in power shots:

Till landed a solid clinch knee after one of WB's failed blitz attempts and an elbow from the clinch position he had that I address below and a left hand that had about as much impact as many of Wonderboys. Till was also landing a few of those low side kicks which were clearly having an effect on Wonderboy's countering and his movement. He said after that he thinks his knee might be a bit jacked up because of them.

Till pressured the whole fight and he even did what you could say was the only effective grappling the entire fight by clinching with Wonderboy and pushing against the cage in the 4th.

Wonderboy landed a couple of weak right hands, a solid right hand to the body, a left hook and a body kick.

It's basically a knee, an elbow and a left hand vs a right to the body, a left hook and a body kick. Those were the most significant strikes from what I saw in the round.

Not sure if serious.
not really..best not to take internet too serious

I respect him a lot

but just cause he judges a fight a certain way does not make the gold standard

Not even sure what his real opinion is on this fight, but IMO he has been off on a few of the things he tweets about lately.

Big john is a stud, but MMA is big and his opinion is just an opinion...his may be backed by history and experience but that does not mean he can't be wrong or biased

IF he doesn't value damage or ring control then I will just have to agree to disagree with him.

BJM a stud...but he is human

Rules and scoring criteria are so subjective no matter how much they are written to be clear cut...still using 10-9 systems for christ's sake...I don't think anyone "won" the "fight"...but if one guy has to get the nod for fans to be happy then I think Till should get it...his leg damage inflicted on wb and that knockdown were by far the most effective techniques of the fight

IMHO

damage wins fights IMO

how can you win a fight without damaging your opponent?

the 10-9 Scoring system is bullshit, unless you score 10-10 rounds on close rounds

why is 10 the top score when the largest spread we ever see is a 10-7

3point must system would be just as effective and logical

MMA judging sucks cause it is not original and was a rip off....and corrupt and incompetent judges are abound and put in place for certain matches/fighters
I have “Damage Wins Fights” tattooed across my shoulder blades.

BJM just made himself look stupid. Everything he wrote suggests Till won the fight but he is saying Wonderboy should have got the nod.

He said Aggression should be awarded first though.

Given how even round 4 was, I'd say you'd have to give it to Till if you were to pick a winner.

2, 4 and 5.

48-47.

Damn close fight though.
I thought WB edged him but was a great fight. At least i thought so

Wonderboy was the #1 contender at 170, but instead of fighting for the interim belt, he was matched against a guy ranked #8, in that guy's (Till's) hometown, and to add insult to injury, Till misses weight by three pounds. Wonderboy goes ahead with the fight in spite of everything and loses a close decision that many fans outside of Liverpool thought he won (albeit in a less than exciting fashion). It was a longshot that Wonderboy would ever get that third shot at Woodley's belt before, and now? Stephen Thomspon lost more than a fight this past weekend, and at 35 years of age, I can only hope that his contract is almost up so he can go to Bellator and rematch Rory MacDonald.

Big john is cool

but he has shown to be biased in his own way

If WB was a better man that fight, then he would have done damage to Till.

Till did a lot of leg damage IMO and also dropped WB clean

If that doesn't get you a W in a point based fight then I don't wanna watch.

BJM is not the end all be all of judging a fight...he has good insight but he is just another monday morning QB on twitter
Aside from he came up with the ruleset

I don’t think you think a Brit or an Aussie has ever lost an MMA fight. You are the most biased Homer in the MMA posting business.
