I find the idea that North Korea should be giving anything up in order to have a discussion exceptionalist and symptomatic of a Cold War style of diplomacy. This isn't much different from when Obama opened the pathway to Cuba, which his opponents derided (and Trump largely reversed).

Most of the credit for this moment belongs to Moon Jae In, but Trump deserves credit too for being open to it, whether out of naivete or genuine consideration. Symbolically this was good for America's diplomatic reputation and in practice may decrease some of the precarity of life on and around the Korean penninsula.

I'm very fascinated by the narratives of Trump fans who think this is meaningful and Trump opponents who think it's meaningless. Both perspectives seem to be manufactured and canned with very little critical thought.

With Trump allegedly considering to give concessions made during the summit, this way when things do break down (and they will) you can't really say that it's Trump's fault for not responding positively to Kim's attempts at peace which was the mood pre-summit.

I don't for a minute believe Trump has just all of a sudden changed his stance on North Korea and I believe he would have preferred to remain vigilant and cancel the summit and that he knows this will go to shit and all these concessions will get revoked eventually. However if he doesn't at least show he's willing to give Kim a chance, the detractors will blame him for an eternity that he elevated the already tumultuous relations by refusing to meet Kim's goodwill by attending the summit and take a once in a lifetime chance at peace.
