Math is a language. The 'sign' is the direction and the 'number' is the magnitude. So writing (-4)(-12) is like saying "not never" which is the same as saying "always". So a double-negative equals a positive. If you're talking about time, it's a line that starts at 0 in any frame of reference, so negative time isn't something you can express. "Negative Time" is like saying "Elbow Pizza".Okay, to preface this, math is harder for me than for some of you and yes I understand that (-4)(-12) = 48 but how is this ever practically applicable?
Like, wtf, if I lose 4 tires then I have -4 tires but then I multiply that by the negative times I have lost 4 tires in a year and now I magically have 48 fucking tires for the year?
Obviously, I am not talented when it comes to practical math (or really at all) but still, can someone make some sense of how multiplying two negatives gives me a positive and how any of this translates to real life?
i love coldplay. one of the best concerts ive been tooKnew you were a Coldplay fan really.
I've just paused it to say thank you. I hadn't seen it the whole thing all the way through before. Everyone gives Chris Martin such a hard time, but he's really funny.i love coldplay. one of the best concerts ive been too
@conor mcgregor nut hugger you've prolly seen this, but if not
I appreciate the effort....it's just, it's just how the hell would I ever use that? I mean, what the heck is the point?Math is a language. Why/How the heck would I take negative steps? Why can't I just turn around and take normal steps? The debt idea makes a ton of sense, due to the idea if negative numbers essentially meaning you are in debt of something. Only idea I could come up with is using distance w/ mental integer added.
Say you take 4 steps backwards (-4), that is your starting point, and then continue on that exact path 12 more times. (12)
(-4 steps)(12 same direction)= negative 48 steps.
With -4 steps being the starting point, the next negative reverses the process, so you are now going -4 steps in the opposite direction (-12 now)
(-4)(-12)= 48 positive steps
Only thing I could come up with, but not sure when you’ll ever really need to use that.
Plus he married an insufferable cunt, so he gets a pass.I've just paused it to say thank you. I hadn't seen it the whole thing all the way through before. Everyone gives Chris Martin such a hard time, but he's really funny.
I love your word choice "was on about"Why/How the heck would I take negative steps? Why can't I just turn around and take normal steps?
I'm only half-joking, I think you're referring to what K @Kaladin Stormblessed was on about. I guess I get it but it seems like a pointless and impractical way to refer to movement except for programming (this is only if I actually understand what you're saying).
She just married someone else. She is, however a c**t. Other half had the misfortune to work with her for a day and she was an absolute tosser all day.Plus he married an insufferable cunt, so he gets a pass.
It was supposed to be "if you're on about the same thing K @Kaladin Stormblessed had referred to."I love your word choice "was on about"
When people around me use that phrase it implies that your blowing off the person, since he or she is a weirdo/dummy
Which i am. So I laughed at your wording )
(-1)(-100)% agree. It is very pointless and impractical. To my understanding, thats why this thread was createdWhy/How the heck would I take negative steps? Why can't I just turn around and take normal steps?

Your understanding is (-1)(100%), I honestly thought there were practical ways to apply the concept.(-1)(-100)% agree. It is very pointless and impractical. To my understanding, thats why this thread was created
so the problem with your example is that you started with the nonsensical 'negative time'. If I define time zero as 12 months in the future, then my current time is (-12).I appreciate the effort....it's just, it's just how the hell would I ever use that? I mean, what the heck is the point?
I could make a pizza of chicken elbows (wings) and call it Elbow Pizza...hmmm, elbow pizza...
Does this mean I need to lose 4 tires a month for a year?so the problem with your example is that you started with the nonsensical 'negative time'. If I define time zero as 12 months in the future, then my current time is (-12).
If I lose 4 units a month, my function for units at any given time is f(t) = -4t. So if t(0) = 0, then if I want to know how many units I need to have 12 months in advance to be at 0 units in at t0, then f(-12) = (-4)(-12) = 48
I need to have 48 units now to be at 0 units in 12 months.
Hear ya on that last part. Was trying to get @FrankieNYC to explain the USADA testing pool to me the other night and turned into a miscommunication one reply in from meYour understanding is (-1)(100%), I honestly thought there were practical ways to apply the concept.
My next question will be about how to distribute signs in equations, but first I have to figure out how to ask about something that I don't understand.
It's funny but sometimes people understand concepts so badly that we can't even figure out how to ask what we don't know.
