Not a bad answer but only partially satisfies one criteria. Jabs do end fights in MMA (occasionally) and they don't have to cause a potentially career-impacting serious injury to do so. Jabs also tangibly lead to other finishes all the time - it's hard to name a fight that were finished off the back off oblique kicks.

And I also added a 3rd one criteria - getting rid of jabs fundamentally changes the sport, getting rid of these kicks changes very little.

I don’t know why these guys don’t just sit down together and talk about their feelings to work things out.

Groin shots are so cheap
You might as well also allow someone to hide a knife and use it for good measure to gouge someone’s eye out to get an advantage
I got dq'd in a tkd tournament after I got kicked in the balls 3 times. 2 I think were just incidental. 1 I thought was blatant. Then I grabbed his chest gaurd and punched him right in the face. His team mates were not amused. Looking back I'm surprised I did get jumped in the parking lot.

Edit: the ref didnt call any of the nut shots.

it's this sort of mind-numbing post which prevents any reasonable discussion here.
Do you like apples?
Tell me himmy, why do you think it’s ok to ban something that is no more lethal than putting your shin into someone’s temple? You could crack someone’s skull doing that or let’s talk knees to the ribs and face and skull.....much more dangerous and yet it’s allowed......this subject is stupid and should not be considered unless you look at every strike and also while we’re at, why are slams allowed, you can break someone’s neck...guillotine’s are dangerous also, you could accidentally kill someone

There's not much to discuss. It's mma, it's about fighting. If they want protection from injury then they ought to fight better or get into a new line of work.
No one is missing Thompson after his last few fights. That's another harsh aspect of mma.

What's the diff between trying to take someone's acl out vs trying to concuss someone's brain into a spasm? Under that logic we should ban heel hooks too...
I knew heel hooks would come up! And I have no defense for that argument lol.

will be in touch with an unhelpful but thoughtfully written reply a bit later on lolz

I do. A successful heel hook will end the fight (unless you're Don Frye) and getting rid of them changes an important aspect of MMA. There are already enough rules that hurt grapplers and leg locks are an important thing to be able to at least threaten with on the ground.

That said, the likelihood they cause serious injury means it's a legit argument to ban them.

There's an opportunity to tap to a heel hook which doesn't exist with a side-kick to the knee.
With a heel hook, the fighter has at least a modicum of control over the risk of career-ending injury. Not so with a kick.

That's your defense for that argument.

No one does that. No one purposely breaks noses and certainly not eyes. I’m shocked that overwhelming majority doesn’t agree that it’s a dirty tactic.
everyone who has ever thrown a jab has tried to break someone's nose.

there's a difference between having a chance to tap and having an opponent who doesn't respect the tap.
Paul Harris should have been banned, not heel hooks.
Jon Jones should be banned, not side-kicks to the knee.

I like side kicks to the knee
Do you have time to tap to a blistering wheel kick from barboza? Or a knee that cracks your skull ?

I get what you mean but that is a jab, a kick to the front of the knee is dirty and can easily be career ending. Lots of broken noses I have never seen a career end on one. broken jaws too.
I get what you're saying, I guess the question to ask is WHY should techniques be illegal, and then we can see if front-of-the-knee (FOTK) kicks should be banned.

In my mind, a technique should be banned if it requires little or know skill to develop, and has the potential to end a career (or life) without the opponent, referee, or corner having an opportunity to surrender the fight.

agree, just saying that any technique is dangerous if wielded by a dirty (or even margins-of-the-Rule-Book) fighter

So you just hit that on the head because that move requires zero skill and only a bit of accuracy.

but I think requires about as much skill (and more accuracy) than a regular leg kick, no?
or maybe checking kicks? requires little skill, almost no accuracy, and can end a career...
