A more accurate measurement would be the ratio of those over 36 to
total fighters on their respective rosters. That would tell us which of the 2
have the larger percentage of over the hill fighters
And 36 is too low as criteria. Also, the context should be, how long have those fighters fought in the organization. There's a difference in a fighter at the end of his tenure or being just hired at 38-42 years of age.

Doesn't that go for everything though?
Not sure what you mean?
Machida has headlined events almost nonstop for a decade. Comparing a fan’s ability to be aware of him compared to say Leon Edwards is dumb.

OK.

Bellator has 23 ( forgot Heather Hardy and Colleen Schneider in the original count) out of 166 fighters for a total of 13%.

UFC has 72 out of 546 fighters for a total of.....13%.

Bellator leads now with 14 to the UFC's 11.

Bellator has 2 39 year olds to the UFC's 10, so a year from now they'll be way in the lead.
If they're still with the promotion. And Bellator still has time to sign more Robbie Hart @Robbie Hart s.

How many fighters does each promotion have under contract?

It would be very impressive to avenge your loss after the guy turns 40.

People have been saying for 5 years that Vitor should retire but somehow Machida beating him is a signature win si ce he is a bellasnore fighter now. Gtfo of here with that. Another over the hill former UFC guy that cant cut it in the big leagues that Coker overpays for. I like Machida but his last good win was 4 years ago
Beating Andrs was a good win but he was def on his bike and scared that whole fight

Who is Leon Edwards?

Yeah, preaching to the choir here. Machida is one of my all itme favorites. A true champion of the sport.

But time goes on, and has gone on, and newer fans may not be as impressed, or simply have followed other fighters. They could still be deemed MMA fans, even if ignorant of one of the best ambassadors of the sport.

Didn't know there was an event until I saw a thread. UFC definitely churning out more shit shows, because people still willing to watch and pay for that shit.

I agree but none of that is relevant. You’re bashing Bellator for signing a fighter that people had to pay $65 to watch last month on a UFC event. You can say he should retire but if Bellator didn’t pay him , the ufc would have and he’d be headlining another one of their events.
Wasnt that the worst PPV in UFC history? Just because you are the co Main to a womans title fight doesnt make it right or make you a big name.

Not the worst
Not the co main event
Not thinking Machida is a big name is ridiculous

I’m not sure exactly where you’re going with this either. Is your argument Machida is a bum and Bellator is bush league for signing him?

It's sad to think people around my age are considered old and over the hill even though I know it's true. It's sadder to see them used as seat fillers for various promotions as they get fed to young lions. One thing I like about Bellator is their tendency to do old school vs. old school fights since it's more merciful than using legends for stepping stones.

Yeah you can add more parameters to further refine the picture but it looks
like they are basically even as far as having over the hill fighters.

can run it back with Gegard...that match was unfinished business

round 6
The Moose would whoop him easily now but I always thought Lyoto beat him pretty decisively and Mousasi has been unnecessarily salty about that. He got drawn into a stalemate on the feet and couldn't do nothing.

On the other hand afair that was when No Fucks Mousasi was born and that was a good thing.

But 36 isn't exactly over the hill, it's close, but a little low to call someone old. 40 years and over, that is the true aged fighter.

It's basically impossible to pick an age.

If you ask me who the more over the hill fighter is between Overreem and Romero then I'm picking Reem even though he's 3ish years younger. Same with Arlovski and Romero.

In battle years, Robbie Lawler is probably as old as Machida. Rory is probably as old as GSP. Cowboy is definitely over 40 in fight years even if he's 35.

Guys like Jeremy Stephens and Max Holloway will be "old" long before they're even close to being old.

That said... If a fighter is older is than me then they're generally too damned old to still be fighting. So 38+ fighters need to sign up for AARP.

Thanks for the info.

Couple of serious questions for the Bellator haters/detractors.

What should Coker/Viacom do? Close up shop and go away? Should there be no competition for the UFC?

They’ve signed some very good young talent (Pico, Ruth, Storley, Cotton, Fortune, Joey Davis, etc). They’ve signed free agents like Macdonald, Mousasi, Bendo who were at the top of their divisions in the UFC. And they’ve signed some older guys for name value, so people that tune in to watch them will see the young guys & they’ll get some exposure.

Outside of their shitty TV deals (which they’re working to fix), I honestly don’t know what you all want or expect.

No its that Bellator is where guys that cant compete in the UFC go. Machida is awesome but lets be real. If he reaigned with the UFC no one would care, since its bellator everyone is acting like he is the same fighter that beat Rashad.

Here's something small that irritates me.

I'd love to see them market the events that don't include the vets better or add a vet to every card if they're going to continue to pick them up. MMA Media by and large still doesn't cover Bellator the way that they should and far too often it seems as though Bellator is just having throwaway events for the sake of having an event somewhere. For example, if not for TheEmperorRises @TheEmperorRises posting on here about 204 with Caldwell, who is an absolute beast, I wouldn't know about the event at all. That would be a great card to have one of their bigger named pickups on so that Caldwell and Storley could potentially get a little extra shine. Instead, it will probably go under-covered and under-watched and those young prospects will be underserved.

I think they're far too small still to bother with events that don't matter. By only having 160 guys on the roster they have a unique ability to keep them active and load up the cards far more by just eliminating a throwaway event that won't get great ratings.

Hell... People seem to be more excited about the PFL on a Thursday than most people ever get about a Bellator card because the fights are delivering and there are quality fighters, decent names, and the only gimmick is the million dollar payout. Not Chael vs Fedor for potentially a heavyweight title in 2018.
