If they move from bt sport, sayonara unless it’s free tv for me

For fuck sake, I’m moving to a new place on Tuesday, just found out from EE that I get bt sport for free as part of my phone package, cancelled bt sport (£33/month I was paying) and was thinking “Robbie, you’ve done well, pat yourself on the back son, let’s get ready for some free fun”......

.
information is pretty scarce on the ground.. what snippets we have from various media reports over the last few months

+ Eleven (which i will call 11 going forward cos eleven is a real pain to type. always ends up as elven or something.. ) but anyway.. 11 are launching in the UK in August initially as online only channels. So Web, IOS, Android (not Roku or Amazon Fire that I can see)

+ If you visit their website they say they are in discussions with Sky, BT, Virgin etc for the channel to be carried on their platforms.

+ 11 in the UK are part owned, invested in, or partnered by IMG. Its really unclear how deap their relationship goes but its certainly financial. Been described in some media as a "minority stake" which could be anything from 1% to 40%

+ The head of 11 for the Uk and Ireland is the former head of BT TV (So no surprise going on the same model and targeting UFC early)

+ They already operate across europe and in parts of Asia and in most of these regions they carry both UFC and CageWarriors programming along with some other MMA

+ One channel will be for football (soccer) the other for varied sports including MMA. They have already stolen Serie A (Italian Football) from BT and La Liga (Spanish football) from Sky,.

+ There is talk of PPV on other platforms. What it looks like is, subscribers will be able to watch all UFC on the channels, but for non subscribers they will be able to buy single events (presumably just numbered events) from the various box office providers (Sky, BT, ITV, Virgin) - there is simply no way they will make some events ppv in addition to subs unless they are complete idiots.

Its potentially pretty crap for UK viewers, having to add ANOTHER subscription to what they already have. BT Sport has been great offering Premier League, European Football (Champions league etc) and is a must have for fans with teams in champions league or europa league. Sky could be the losers if fans who like Serie A or La Liga dont want multiple subscriptions.

I dont think being online only is a particular deal breaker nowadays. Most people have either chromecast, smart tv, fire tv, or other ways of watching internet tv on the big screen. but it will certainly cost them the casual viewer in the short term.

The WME/IMG plan though is pretty clearly unfolding.

A few months back they bought the streaming provider Neulion (who are responsible for fightpass), now invested into streaming sports channels.. Thats clearly their long term view..

And when you think how much sport broadcast rights cost, the UK premier league rights alone sold for $7bn for 3 years, NFL rights sell for huge amounts.. $4bn for exclusive access to all UFC programming is pretty much a bargain..

----------

other notes. In Belgium and Luxembourg they carry 40 events and 150 hours of "additional programming" so preview shows etc

Eleven Sports secures live UFC coverage

Also note that their deal for Cage Warriors was "in all markets" so have to presume that Cage Warriors will move from BT to 11

-----------

Oh heres another one.. 11's "network partner" is none other than WME owned Neulion

Thanks for bringing the news FrankieNYC @FrankieNYC

Wild @Wild @Splinty you should promote nuraknu @nuraknu and FrankieNYC @FrankieNYC to be editors in chief of the news portion of this site.
I have said this before but much is coming on that front to provide the community more access to the front page. I agree those two are gems!
Thank you
I am not sure what that means, but it seems good ;)

Wild @Wild & I have been talking about "stuff" that can help bring attention to the site this fall

but this news was on Dim @Dim & anything regarding USADA is his wheelhouse

I been trying to bring some knowledgeable people here, but for some reason getting people to try a new forum is harder than I thought

People are creatures of habit

Some newer info (taken from SD):

ELEVEN SPORTS - FOR THE FANS

If you sign up here:

Register - Eleven Sports HQ

You get the latest info and promotions and discounts, its free for now to sign up.

Also an FAQ here; but I noticed they mentioned they may offer it to sky/btsports also....
UK & IRELAND FAQ's - Eleven Sports HQ

WHERE CAN I WATCH ELEVEN SPORTS? / WHAT DEVICES WILL ELEVEN SPORTS BE AVAILABLE ON?
Once we have launched our streaming platform in August, you will be able to watch ELEVEN SPORTS on:

  • Our website via ELEVEN’s streaming platform
  • Our iOS mobile & tablet apps (available from the Apple Store)
  • Our Android mobile & tablet apps (available from the Google Play Store)
We are working hard to ensure distribution everywhere and that means that we are also in discussions with all major platforms (including Sky, BT & Virgin) in the UK and Ireland to offer you the widest possible access to our content. To find out if ELEVEN is carried or to request ELEVEN SPORTS on your platform, let their customer service know via social media or via the appropriate feedback channels. They are always responsive to customer demand and take note of requests.

Some other info I added on other sites:

My prediction is in 5 years we will see a lot of the OTT services combining & more competitive pricing.
There is no way for them all to survive with small pieces of the pie

I said a long time ago that WME is turning UFC into a content provider. That is where the money is.
They made $330m in 2017 from TV deals alone
That is before the additional money from ESPN & other deals that escalate
2019 could easily be $500m in TV alone
That is why they are not panicking with PPV numbers being bad (very bad), but I am still in shock they are doing 12 in 2019
PPV is gravy these days

Meltzer:

The BBC reported that BT Sports had lost bidding wars for both the UFC and NBA. Sources in UFC confirmed to us that negotiations with Eleven Sports, noted in last week’s issue, were very close to being finalized, which would be the new home in less than five months.
BT Sports’ last UFC broadcast was listed in the BBC story as 12/3. BT said that they walked out of talks with both companies after giving up in a bidding war.
BT spent heavily to get the Premier League and Champions League soccer.
BT said that they would concentrate on soccer, rugby and boxing going forward. It is not known what will be done as far as the split of shows between television, streaming and PPV.
UFC’s biggest shows are going to be moved to PPV, as it was noted to us that it made no sense for McGregor shows to not be on PPV, considering the U.K. is the No. 2 PPV market in the world for both boxing and was and still is No. 2 for WWE as well
