UFC 227 fight night weights: All but six fighters come in over CSAC regulations

CSAC rules state that any fighters who come in higher than 10 percent above their contracted weight class in a fight-day weight check can be recommended to move up a division in the future. At Staples Center, 18 fighters — three-quarters of the card — came in above that 10-percent marker.

Main card (PPV)

T.J. Dillashaw (135 pounds to 149.5 pounds = 10.7%) def. Cody Garbrandt (134.7 to 142 = 5.2%)

Henry Cejudo (124.5 to 141 = 12.8%) def. Demetrious Johnson (125 to 142 = 13.6%)

Renato Moicano (146 to 165.5 = 13.4%) def. Cub Swanson (145.2 to 160.5 = 9.9%)

J.J. Aldrich (115.8 to 130.5 = 12.5%) def. Polyana Viana (115 to 129.5 = 11.6%)

Thiago Santos (185.5 to 209.5 = 12.6%) def. Kevin Holland (184.7 to 193 = 3.8%)

Prelims (FX)

Pedro Munhoz (135 to 151 = 11%) def. Brett Johns (135.2 to 158 = 16.2%)

Ricky Simon (135.2 to 152 = 11.8%) def. Montel Jackson (136 to 152 = 11.8%)

Ricardo Ramos (135.5 to 153.5 = 12.9%) def. Kyung Ho Kang (136 to 154 = 13.2%)

Sheymon Moraes (146 to 164 = 12.3%) def. Matt Sayles (145.7 to 165 = 13%)

Prelims (UFC Fight Pass)

Weili Zhang (115.5 to 127 = 9.5%) def. Danielle Taylor (115.4 to 124.5 = 7.3%)

BTW this is why Floyd Mayweather deserves a lot of respect. He would weigh in at 147 and come into the ring at 149-150 (boxing did day-of weigh in checks at the time), meanwhile his opponents were putting 15-20lbs back on.

Pretty interesting.

Kind of crazy that DJ and Cody were the same weight on fight day. The fuck?

Mabe this is a bit off topic but im having trouble finding out this information on my own... have u any stats on Holloway, Ortega and Zabit fight day weight? Ive heard so many saying Zabit should move up a weightclass but my estimated guess is that Ortega Holloway and probably handfull other fighters in that division are weighing in heavier then Zabit on fight day.

I don't think you will find that
This is something CSAC does

When he moved up another weight class he would eat the day of weighins to hit 151 or 152, then come into the fight the following day 1-3 pounds lighter.

This is a good indication of what weight these fighters should really be fighting at.

TJ should be at 145
Cody is fine at 135
MM and Cejudo should be 135 meaning the 125 division should be scrapped completely.

I like the idea of fight day weight checks. In boxing, they list the weight and then the fight-day weight

I used to put on more than 10% without an active water cut. I think hydration levels would be a better measure.

For example, first thing in the morning after a poo, I could weigh 145. Over a week or so I diet down to 138 by cutting out carbs and sodium and increasing water. Then stop water intake for 24 hours and float down to 135. Add some electrolytes, carb powder and water and I get back to 145 very quickly. Then stuff my face with all sorts and bloat my way up over 150. At no point was I near dangerously dehydrated.

The truly IMPORTANT thing to come away with after looking at these numbers is that EVERY fighter with only one exception (Brett Johns) would be able to fight his opponent a weight class up. Only ONE fighter out of TWENTY-FOUR (4%) actually gained a "weight-class advantage" by cutting. Every other fighter just signed to fight someone who weighs about the same as they do and then both parties agreed to dehydrate themselves to the point of sickness and then fight.

Weight-cutting is LITERALLY a mental illness imo......

Oh, and the one fighter who had a weight advantage (Brett Johns) LOST.......
