Consider this a follow-up to my thread about where everybody gets their news.

Does anyone here ever watch RT or read their articles?

If you've never heard of them, they are a Russian-backed news organization whose focus is on providing news from a Russian perspective to the rest of the world. The original name was Russia Today. Get it? RT.

Now there's also RT America, a streaming news service with an office in Washington DC and they have shows with a whole host of characters including Oliver Stone's son Sean Stone, Jesse Ventura and even Larry King.

Because of RT's ties to the Kremlin, you have to constantly be asking "what's the angle?" but I do like that they come at things from a different perspective than the MSM. Right now they're really hitting the Alex Jones story hard. They've published five articles on the subject just in the last 24 hours.

ROKU abolished their app 2 years ago.
Pluto TV carries them, and it now, obviously, won't be long until Pluto boots them.
Same thing that happened to Al Jazeera America 8'ish years ago.

I heard about that. The funny this is, it has seemed to me that RT has actually gotten a lot BETTER in terms of shit like delivering credible news and not wearing their bias on their sleeve. I have neither the necessary desire nor the means to do it, but I'd love to see an extensive fact-check of their news for a week and then see how their accuracy stacks up against CNN and Fox.

Though I do know a reporter once famously quit on air because the network refused to criticize Vladamir Putin:

Abby Martin had a similar issue.
These girls don't see the big picture, at least they didn't.

There are some questions about why Abby left RT but according to her, it was simply because she wanted to do more investigative reporting.

This is all Wikipedia says about her departure:
The Breaking the Set program came to an end in February 2015, with Martin leaving RT and stating she had "decided to focus on investigative field reporting". Speaking for RT, Anna Belkina told BuzzFeed: "Abby decided that this is the time for her to try something new. We are proud of the great work she has done as the host of Breaking the Set."
Here's an interesting article where she defends the network and her work there, two years after leaving RT:

Abby Martin Responds to New York Times Allegations

I know her big moment was when she criticized Russia's involvement in Ukraine on air, a move which was regarded as a big deal since they're Russia-backed. According to her, she never got any pushback for it, and I think RT has since used that moment to claim that they are an objective news service and that RT America retains editorial control over their own reporting.

The only real question is, are their news anchors hot Russian chicks or total cheesy momo’s like all American ones?

I like their production, it's certainly more streamlined (in a good way). I know this one Birt who thinks anything out of RT is rubbish, but then again he fucking hates anything Russian.

It still amazes me in this day and age that people of my generation aren't aware there are no "good guys" in the global game and everyone's government is well-stocked with cowards, cunts and culprits.

I never heard of them until I posted one of their videos here where they interviewed John McAfee, and I got slammed for posting "Russian propaganda".

I found a video of John McAfee saying the exact same thing on Larry King's show, but it was too late - by virtue of being broadcast by RT at one time, the info was already null and void apparently! lol smh

Like I said, I always approach RT a bit cautiously, but I also have found that you can get some good information from them. One thing to keep in mind is that RT America is produced in the United States and, at least from what some of the American anchors have SAID, they have editorial freedom and don't take marching orders from the Kremlin.

Personally, I think that you should just go into RT with certain expectations. Don't expect them to be too critical of Putin or decisions made by the Russian government (even though Abby Martin got away with it), and always ask what the angle is regarding any political coverage. But I have watched a lot of their news broadcasts and have also read a lot of their articles and I have not yet detected a lot of factual errors in the coverage.

Any time I've seen the same story reported by RT and other outlets, and was able to cross-reference the information in the RT article with the information in other articles, the facts were the same.

That is what I can say about that.

I think the only people who know what it's like to be a reporter for RT are people who actually work for RT. For the rest of us, all we can do it speculate.
I think anyone who watches their videos or reads their articles can see exactly who they're taking orders from.

I think the network is pretty transparent, for the most part. According to the About section on their website:

RT creates news with an edge for viewers who want to Question More. RT covers stories overlooked by the mainstream media, provides alternative perspectives on current affairs, and acquaints international audiences with a Russian viewpoint on major global events.

I think that lays it out pretty succinctly. They're open about wanting to "acquaint international audiences with a Russian viewpoint." And like I said just a few posts ago, I wouldn't watch RT expecting them to criticize Putin or the Russian government (even though that has happened).

But they still do some good work. They've been doing a good job covering the Alex Jones situation the last few days. And most of their news coverage I think is pretty fair and straightforward.

Fair enough.

What do you think about Larry King having a show on there? Do you think that diminishes him in some way?
I don't think so, but he has said that he doesn't work for RT, that it's Ora TV which licenses his show to RT. But it wouldn't bother me even if he did.

That being said, I never held a very high opinion of him anyway.

Denis Geyko is an mma reporter for rt and he's pretty good. Yeah, they throw a lot of softballs in their interviews, but you know what you're getting...but they get info that others can't sometimes through those softball interviews.

Yaroslav Stepanov from sportbox.ru is another good follow...he doesn't post often I don't think, but when he does, it's usually info I haven't seen anywhere else yet.

Interesting. Didn't realize they had an MMA reporter, though I have noticed that there's been a lot of articles about Khabib lately.

I kind of like one of their opinion shows, Watching the Hawks. It's hosted by Sean Stone (son of Oliver Stone), Tyrel Ventura (son of Jesse Ventura) and Tabbetha Wallace. I definitely don't always agree with them, but I like getting their perspective sometimes.

Yeah I'm rather guilty when it comes to a lot of fact checking from news sources. At one point I think I did (selective bias?) but after finding so many of allegations and claims in the Syria conflict to be utter bullshit, I'm loathe to follow any major news source very much these days.

But I like your post, it's well-balanced and fair...perhaps some things major networks could use more of.
