I figured it could be good to have a general movie discussion thread. Any time there's some movie news, or you want to post a review or offer some other comment about a film, and you don't think it's worth creating a whole new thread for it then post it in here.

I've watched some films and run across some news that I thought about posting but was like, "Nah, the thread probably won't even get 10 responses." I'm sure others have been in that position, too. This thread solves that problem.

Hey, I'll start. . .

I saw The Meg today.

It was . . . okay. It's Jason Statham vs Giant Shark. No more, no less.

It was a decent enough time at the movies and I did enjoy spending two hours looking at this girl:

But as a summer blockbuster it really is pretty average fare. While the concept is good and the effects are serviceable, the dialogue is occasionally laughable and there are times in the film where it should have a lot of energy but just feels strangely inert.

If you just want to go see a movie and this sounds like it's up your alley, then just make sure to go in with modest expectations. Under those circumstances you can probably have some fun with it.

All in all, I guess I would give it a 6.5/10.

Right after I post this I see we apparently have a "rate the last movie you saw" thread.

Eh well, maybe they can both survive.

Avengers Infinity War Thoughts:
thor was really good
Saw it. Was bored by it.

I don't know what it is about the Avengers films but I have disliked all of them. It just seems like any time they try to cram so many characters into one film the result is an uninteresting story.

Not sure if anyone here gives a shit about Star Trek, but it looks like Chris Pine's and Chris Hemsworth's involvement in Star Trek 4 is in doubt.

Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth are no longer boldly going where no person has gone before.

The two actors were in negotiations to star in Star Trek 4, but sources say that talks between the two actors and the companies making the new installment, Paramount Pictures and Skydance Media, have fallen apart, with both sides walking away from the table.

Dealmaking with other returning castmembers — including Zoe Saldana, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg and John Cho — was expected to follow.

Pine was due to reprise his role as iconic sci-fi hero Captain Kirk, which he has inhabited for three movies, while Hemsworth was to have played his father in a time-traveling adventure. (Hemsworth played the role in the prologue of the 2009 film that rebooted the franchise.)

The deal points came down to the usual suspect: money. Pine and Hemsworth, among Hollywood’s A-list when starring in DC or Marvel movies, are said to be asking the studios to stick to existing deals. Paramount, according to insiders, contends that Star Trek is not like a Marvel or Star Wars movie and is trying to hold the line on a budget.

The actors, according to sources, insist they have deals in place and that the studios are reneging on them, forcing them to take pay cuts as they try to budget a movie that is following a mediocre performer.

The first was the best Avengers movie. The payoff of seeing all the characters together on screen after the solo movies was great!
They haven't been able to top that in any of the sequels imo

I remember thinking even the first one was a bore. The second was worse. The third was . . . all right.

I have enjoyed nearly everything else in the MCU much more. Winter Soldier is probably still the best of the whole lot.

Couldn't care less for Star Trek but I'm very interested in Hemsworth.

I doubt his involvement will be big enough to get me into the theatre for this new one.
Yeah, Hemsworth is not important to the franchise at all, but Pine certainly is. He's goddamned Captain Kirk!

Not sure what they'd do if they can't lure him back. Re-cast, I guess.

BTW, if you're a Hemsworth fan I assume you've already seen Rush, but if not, go watch Rush.

Looks like The Meg took in $44 million domestically this weekend and $141 million worldwide. That smashes the box office projections of a domestic haul in the mid-20s.

The Meg is a Chinese-American co-production and apparently China contributed about half of the $97 million international box office.

Upcoming film with Matthew McConaughey. I think it looks interesting. Will definitely check it out.

Hopefully it will be a hit for MM because he needs one. It's been a minute since he was in a film that really performed well.

This looks excellent. Fuck do I love McConaughey since he shed all the sexy muscle man stuff and became a seriously incredible actor.
