Least successful title “reign” ever?
So there was this woman named Germaine de Randamie....
Look, at least Nicco Montana had to win a tournament with 16 people in it to get her belt. It wasn't loaded with the sort of talent TUF 20 was, but she beat the top 3 seeds, and also made weight that whole time.
I honestly don't like what the UFC's done here. It's shitty that Montano missed weight but it was her first time doing so. It's shitty that she was injured and out for so long but people get injured all the time. What's more, people going longer than 280 days without defending their belt has happened
at least 40 times in UFC history, and only five times have people been stripped for injury, inactivity, or in one case a refusal to defend. I'm not counting people who were stripped for misconduct, drug tests, or contract disputes here, that's a completely different thing as the company has no choice at that point.
The people in similar situations to Montano are as follows:
-Frank Mir was stripped 419 days after his first UFC title fight win due to injuries that made it unclear when he'd return. They waited nearly a year for him to heal before doing so.
-Dominick Cruz was stripped 828 days after his final defense against Demetrious Johnson and had been injured for-fucking-ever at that point.
-Conor McGregor was stripped 511 days after he won the LW belt, again with no defenses due to inactivity. Money was definitely a factor here, and it was clear that he would get any fight he desired as soon as he was ready to return.
-Tony Ferguson had been Interim Champion 182 days before he was stripped on the same day as McGregor due to an injury sustained a week before. This seems like the closest analogue to Montano, since he truly wasn't given a fair shake here and it somehow made Interim Titles even more useless, since it wasn't even an effective placeholder. That being said, they at least waited until there was a replacement title fight in place to strip him.
-Germaine de Randamie was stripped after 128 days for cowardice. Say what you will about Montano, but if she was hospitalized it was because a doctor recommended thought she oughta be. You can't just admit yourself into a hospital on your own, hospitals don't have time or space for that bullshit. So I really can't compare the two, even if others will.
I get that Montano isn't terribly marketable or even particularly credible, but I don't think there's been another Champion fucked like that except Ferguson.
I hate this bullshit where WME will give massive double standards and play favorites because they have specific people they want as champ. Obviously Zuffa did this too to a degree but at least they weren't this blatant about it.
