Southern half of the NC coast and northern part of SC coast are in big trouble. They are saying we could get up to 6-10” of rain here in the Upstate, significantly more at the coast. If that happens, flooding will be catastrophic in the midlands and lowcountry.

I have some FB friends there from when I lived in VA. They don’t seem to be taking this thing serious. Being from Louisiana and having been through some pretty rough ones, this one would scare the ever living shit out of me. I’d be as far west as possible by now.

This is a category 2 from what I've read. Though no walk in the park, it is certainly better predictions than yesterday and the day before. What is the coastline and 50 miles inland like in that part of the united states? Anything under sea level? Is there a mountain range?

basically gonna get hammered with heavy heavy rain and like 40-50 mph gusts
rain could cause some serious issues if it is heavy enough

Did it downgrade? A CAT4 is not 40-50mph gusts. It’s like 120mph sustained

Right now the winds around the eye are like 55 to 70 sustained

Supposed to be weakening

FYI I am west coast so I don't know much, just watching weather models

Storm surge looking pretty scary on the map predictions. I grew up along the coast of the Gulf and people always underestimate the big slow ones. They just show up and pour rains for days until the flooding damages what the wind didn't. Be safe out there man!

Was in Myrtle Beach this week for our annual golf trip and left Tuesday evening. Was supposed the be there until Saturday. Looks like it’s going to be a bad one.

Our local news said it is gonna be pumping rain for 7 days and could put out 40 inches in some areas...WTF man

and 30 foot swells this evening, does east coast ever get swells that huge?

Never get swells like that except for during a land falling hurricane. I can’t recall ever hearing of swells like that even with prior storms. The almost directly perpendicular to the coast path of this storm is very unusual for SC/NC. The hurricane hunter plane reported an 80 foot wave in the open ocean from this storm. The beach erosion could be crazy; high tide yesterday and this AM is already causing some issues.
Back in ‘99, Floyd just missed us in Charleston and then dumped rain on NC that caused really bad flooding. You could see the effects for years. This might be worse. Hopefully it picks up some speed and rainfall amounts are lower than predicted.

Is the carolina's coastline low elevation? Is it mostly sand or is it exposed rock? I am assuming heavily populated near the water

Lot going on at once, with the wind rain and swells.

here in Oregon most of the sand is gone and we basically have a rock cliff coastline because constant big swells like that have eroded all the gradual coastline...and nobody lives on the coast here because it is such a windy wet place most of year from constant storms

how far inland are you and your family?

this is sketching me out and I am on the complete opposite side of USA
I see images like this and think WTF

Coastline is low, and all sand. The call the eastern 1/3 of SC “the lowcountry”, because there is essentially no significant elevation until you reach the “fall line” just east of Columbia. The fall line is the ancient coastline. Population near the water is spotty (lots of marsh and rural areas), but coastal population has exploded near Charleston and Myrtle Beach in the last decade.

We live in the Upstate, essentially half way between Atlanta and Charlotte. We are almost 200 miles from the coast, and don’t live in a flood zone. This storm should just be an annoyance for us.

I am on call this weekend, so that could be interesting since I can’t send patients to MUSC like I normally would (it is right on the water in Charleston- that is where I was for Floyd), and of it rains as much as they are saying we could have issues with roads closing from flooding/washing out.

The coast of the Carolinas is dotted with barrier islands. They will get over washed by storm surge, as the highest elevation is usually a couple of feet. Folly beach (right by Charleston) lost almost its entire eastern most street to Hugo in ‘89, and occasionally looses an ocean front home at the washout to winter storms.

People think because a hurricane downgrades, it isn’t as serious. They will learn with this one that rain from a large and slow hurricane is just as bad as CAT4 winds. Take our floods here in 2016. Typical thunderstorm moves in with light, but steady rain for days. We ended up having one of the worse floods in a Louisiana history and it started as a bitch ass thunderstorm
