He goes for a high number of takedowns in order to get his opponents to work and gas from his pace. Just to clarify since you looked up the stat, but didn't do the research. The last time Khabib hit more than 50% of his tds was against Darrell Horcher in 2016. The more interesting stat though is the takedown defense stats of Khabib's opponents since then:

Michael Johnson 67% takedown defense
Edson Barboza 70% takedown defense
Al Iaquinta 60% takedown defense
Conor McGregor 58% takedown defense
