I always try to assess the reasons why one fighter ultimately is able to beat another. The psychology and stylistic matchups of this sport fascinate me. MMA is like the most complex version of “Rock, Paper, Scissors” ever. There are umpteen different ways any one particular attribute could be beat some abilities, but lose to others.

It got me thinking: how would I force rank the main attributes in top-tier MMA competition? Here is what I came up with. Not saying I’m right - this is all subjective. I’d love to hear people’s thoughts on what you think are the most mportant ones and where you would agree/disagree with this list:

1. Stamina/Durability
2. Size (not just weight. height, reach, length, etc.)
3. Speed
4. Wrestling/Grappling
5. Mental game/Confidence
6. Technique
7. Submissions
8. Striking
9. Footwork/Distance
10. Youth
11. Power
12. Heart
13. Experience
14. Creativity
15. Aggression

Assuming weight classes are in effect:
1) Skill
2) Cardio
3) Game plan
4) Speed
5) Strength

You could break some of these down further. Under Skill, you can have subsets, such as wrestling, striking, fence work etc. The better wrestler generally has an advantage because they can determine where the fight goes. Of course, outliers like Conor and Anderson exist but they have better takedown defense than some people give them credit for.

Yeah, the further breakdowns are what make this discussion fun, because any one could potentially tip the scales.
