I will try and take pics of the next one I make. Most if it is a kit that I just need to put together. The body (part that I shape) is the most detailed.
That's the part I'm interested in. I assume you are turning it, but I'd love to see the process for the more detailed pieces with graphics.

Drill hole through center with drill bit that kit calls for. I have a free standing drill press

Add a brass tube. Make sure to suff it up with a bit of sand paper. Super glue will attach the tube to inside of wood. After glue dries use an attachment to square the tube to the block. You need this to use the bushings later.

Use bushings that are specific to that pen/kit and then start to “turn” the blank.

“Turn it” until you are even with the bushings and the overall shape you want. I then use sand paper to get it to its final shape. I use 80, 120, 240, 360, 480, 1000 and 1200 grit sanpaper. I its wood I finish it with CA glue (super glue). It gives a nice finish. If its plastic I use a special plastic finishing compound that you can buy online.

Sorry for them being slightly out of order but you get the general idea and see the finished product. Its a bolt action pen. Its hard to get good lighting in the garage.

Simpleman @Simpleman Beautiful!

picking up paint for the toy box this afternoon. I figured out how to cut the entire thing out of exactly one sheet of plywood, and now my Dad is doing hog-wild. :)

I don't think I'm going to get to touch it.

Post pics when youre done. My BIL wants me to build him a sea chest for his retirement but Im not sure I even want to. I wnat to do inlay work and dove tails so they chances are slim.

the original. pushing on 40 years old, still smells like paint if you stick your head in it.

This is how far my dad went after I gave him the cut sheet and a corner clamp.

gotta try and get over there tomorrow if I'm going to do anything besides screw on the piano hinges.
but I'm getting the feeling he wants to make it 'his' gift to the kids.

Love it dude. Thanks for the pics and explanations. I am 100% going to try this. I haven't fired up the lathe in a long time.

i've got a small lathe that's been sitting in the crate for 10 years, don't have the dedicated bench space. Maybe I'll see if The Old Man wants to set it up in his garage...this type of project is right up his alley. He'll probably 3D print the metal parts. :)

Dad went a little overboard. He 3D printed a 'Family Farm' sign over the door, added the little handle to the door, and hand-cut every piece for the windows (8 total).

But it looks amazing. And it came from Santa, as played by Dad, on Christmas Eve.

where are you getting the parts kits?
Woodcraft and sometimes Rocker. DO NOT use palm wood for these or anything really. Damn thing kept splintering and then blew up on me at about 2000 rpm. Hulk smashed a frw things and then started all over.
