Dana White isn’t the only one who doesn’t sound interested in giving Cris Cyborg an immediate shot at regaining her lost featherweight title. The former queen of the 145 lb division more than ready for a rematch against Amanda Nunes, after suffering a first round KO to the bantamweight champion at UFC 232. It was an idea that the UFC President quickly pushed back against.

“It was a pretty convincing win,” White told the assembled media, when asked about the possibility of running the fight back sometime in the immediate future.

And that’s a sentiment that Amanda Nunes is echoing as well. The ‘Lioness’ made an…

Nunes says rematch can wait: After Cyborg hit me, ‘I saw there was no power at all and I put my hands down’

I imagine they just close 145 in the next two years. They will squeeze out a nunes v anderson and nunes vs cyborg 2 at 145 then probably close shop

Im not a big fan of watching womens mma outside of the top 5-10 of the strawweight and batamweight divisions until they get more competitive

I do look forward to tatiana suarez becoming champ

She just killed a division. Rematch for what?
Because Cyborg has been the most dominant female fighter in our lifetime?

This is no different than the Aldo/McGregor situation.
White wants fighters he can completely control, Cyborg has not been that, and Aldo as well.
It's an absolute no-brainer that a rematch is warranted.
Funny that other rematches are given when there's little to no legitimate sports reason behind it.

I think that the only reason to do a rematch is if you have a vibrant division at 145. Which Dana does not.

If cyborg wins the rematch, by fluke or by strategy (because the skill gap is real), what's the next move? Trilogy fight at 145 while the 135 division twists in the wind? If Nunez wins the rematch, Cyborg is shot as a draw and 145 is DOA.

Leave Cris at 145 to fight out her contract, or just close the division now and trade her to another promotion for a some young 135 talent.

Or if they have to have have 4 women’s divisions close 145 and start 105. There are a ton of talented fighters at 105.

None of this makes sense if you weigh the history of the UFC.
Do they do a trilogy if Cyborg wins?
Of course!!!

What skill gap are you talking about?
Cyborg has better jiu-jitsu and is far more powerful.
It's exactly WHY this was considered an upset.
Now that she lost because of poor strategy, there's a skill gap?

A lack of depth, and possible trilogy, are exactly why you do a rematch, and the fact Cyborg has been undefeated for 13 years.
And you think they're gonna close the division after just opening it?
Why do you think Kayla Harrison is being groomed?
Because the UFC has effectively owned WSOF/PFL from the beginning, and the UFC needed a new Ronda Rousey.

Bro, there's never been a more deserved rematch in the history of MMA, apart from Fedor/Werdum, which was also disallowed, again, for control.
And 3rd?
Aldo/Mcgregor.

That rematch was also bullshit.

Most rematches are bullshit. Cyborg was dominant for so long because she fought smaller women/cans most of her career. With a little help from steroids of course. Nunez ended all that, now we can finally move on. Hopefully 145 will dissapear now.

Why would anyone want larger divisions to go?
No one wants to see SuperHeavyweights, or women 145lbs. and over?
I feel like I'm on crazy pills.
So we're gonna tell woman they can compete in combat sports, just so long as they're thin and wispy...
Bye 2-time Olympic gold medalist Kayla Harrison?

And Anderson/Weidman had to be even worse bullshit than all of them right?
Seeing as how he was fighting inferiors at 185 for the majority of his career & got booted from Pride after being .500 then got ktfo.

Of course they do a trilogy if Cyborg wins, short-game decisions abound at the highest levels of UFC. I'm not saying a rematch isn't a good idea, just that an immediate rematch is a bad idea. The only way it's a draw is if there's some level of uncertainty in the outcome, or if the fans Love/Hate the competitors enough to pay to watch them fight. Neither of those scenarios are in play for this rematch. Let Amanda tear it up at 135 for a couple fights, let Cyborg crush some cans at 145, and then come back to the rematch late this year. If Cyborg wins the rematch THEN an immediate trilogy fight is a draw. If Amanda wins, let her stay at 145 or close the division out. You could have a 4-fight playoff at 145 for an Interim Belt, and then unify the 145 belt at a NYE show with Amanda and (most likely) Cyborg.

And it wasn't simply a poor strategy. The striking skill gap is fucking REAL. Amanda was moving off-axis, throwing sizzling straight strikes matched in power only by precision. She also has great wrestling. At least, it's good enough to keep Cyborg on the feet and getting drilled. And I don't know why you think the BJJ of a former professional handball player who transitioned to MMA is so much better than a BJJ black belt who started training at 16, is a brown belt in Judo, has won Naga World Champ (weight class and Absolute), Pan Am Gold, Mundials Gold, and the Brazilian State Jiu-Jitsu Championship. But I think Nunes is a lioness on the feet and a goddamn Tiger Shark in the deep water.

Dude, the fight was 50 seconds.
This same thing has happened to a hundred undefeated fighters.
They get rocked, rely on their record, toughness, and what they perceive as inevitability to power through.
Nunes was a bad matchup, it's similar to Cro Cop or Chuck vs. Vanderlei.

And I don't know if you noticed the arena, but the roof came off the forum.
That should've been the main event in the first place.
MMA fans have short memories and are painfully fickle.
Cyborg is 33 hard years old.
You don't hand her 145'rs and leave that belt floating for 1.5 years, you do the fight on Nunes birthday weekend in Brazil; April Fool's day Rio de Janeiro.
They now likely wanna do Holm/Nunes @135...what happens if Holm(who's a bad stylistic matchup) beats Nunes?

Not doing this fight now is a mistake.
Cyborg wants to retire anyway.
Give her the rematch while it's smoking hot while they each can claim it's the greatest vs. the greatest in their prime; an opportunity to win at least one of a possible prime trilogy before she's gone forever.
You've got to realize, with injuries, dope and stretches, this may never happen if not now.

Telling Cyborg "she needs to go beat up a couple more 145'rs to earn a rematch" after virtually an undefeated career, is like telling Fedor "he needs to go on TUF and prove he's worthy of a Werdum rematch" after his respective loss.

You do these things while they're hot & fresh.
Not doing it as soon as a commission will license will be yet another blunder, and personal fuck you from Dana to Cyborg, as well as others who stand up to him.

Yeah... There simply aren't that many females in existence that weight 145lbs when they are in shape

Its the upper end of basic evolution and human biology

Megan is an outlier...

Cyborg only weighs that much cuz...

Well cuz we all know fucking why

You can't build a division that's based on a weight class that
in shape females simply don't typically weight

It was 50 seconds of 1-sided ass-whoopin. Amanda was landing a significant strike every 4 seconds.
Cyborg landed 3. Total. and 2 of those were body shots.

Cyborg is not a smoking hot draw right now. If Holly beats Amanda they have a far more compelling 2rd fight to THAT trilogy than they do 2nd fight of this maybe-trilogy-if-Cyborg-defies-odds-and-wins... And are you seriously comparing this record:

It's like Field of Dreams, if you build it, they will come.
If there's a Super-HW division. there'll be super-heavyweights.
Dana White has had far too much control in that arena, dictating what is, and isn't relevant; it's crazy.

Cyborg looks like she carries less mass nowadays. If they do rematch it should be at 135. There is no point in having a 145 division, at least 135 has ranked fighters. I agree that if they rematch at 145, it could cause a total headache for the Women's BW division. The title may be put on hold for well over a year. Although, I dunno who there is to challenge Nunes really at that weight either. But, at least 135 has people in it.

Of course.
Undefeated is undefeated, save Fedor's Tsuyoshi Khosaka and Cyborg's first fight.
Anyone who denies Cyborg as being the most dominant fighter in the history of women's MMA, well, I guess that's just an opinion.
But you're more likely to pick Cyborg over someone like Megumi Fujii on size and dominance.
Amanda's a bad chick, I don't even consider the fight an upset.
And if a second fight happens within the year, I'd be happy to put $100 on Cyborg with a 3rd going to Nunes, due to age and wear.
Time is not the friend here, it's exactly why Amanda would rather control the board with Dana; Cyborg has a history with Dana.
Amanda Nunes is no bigger draw than Cyborg, and if she was, why do you think that is?
Maybe because....Dana, hating her and not even creating a division?

There are no Rhonda's right now.

I'm fine with that, in fact I'm better with no weight division at all.
But if we're gonna have them, you can't say "people don't get that big, that's why"
It just comes down to Dana's homoerotic fantasy of selling imagery/sexiness whatever.
Hell yes raise the HW limit to a million pounds.

lol @ amanda having great wrestling. This post is all sorts of short level memory.. Amanda wilts under pressure from the ground game. None of you seem to understand that there was womens divisions prior to the UFC. Amanda got wrecked by Cat, Alexis Davis and Sarah D'Alelio.. Cyborg is the only fight for her right now, the rest of the women are on cards ready to go. 2 fucking years to wait? Thats cowardly shit.

She definitely can't make 135. I mean, if the UFC really wants to spend years developing the 145 division, I could see more women like her (IE Olympians in higher weight classes) coming over. Eventually. But, you gotta wonder.. with them potentially cutting 125 men's - a well established division - are they really going to bother developing WFW?

She did get wrecked by them, but I think she has improved greatly since then. I don't think any of those women beat her in a rematch in 2019.

Agreed that her wrestling is her weakness.
