A legend of the sport in the sunset of his career, Wanderlei Silva has some other preocupations other than fighting at this point in his life. Now 42-years-old, the ‘Axe Murderer’ always stepped into the cage or the ring and swung for the fences no matter who he had in front of him. He seems to finally be experiencing the effects from all the damage he took in his career that had 51 professional bouts — seven of which he lost by knockout — and countless gym wars.

In an interview with Portal do Vale Tudo, Silva revealed he wants to donate his brain for research on dementia pugilistica, also known as chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a condition that affects most…

"Back in my day, we used to believe that the more punches you took, the more you could take. It’s actually the opposite."

My god. It's like CTE is a causal loop. To think that, you have to already have CTE. But yet that's also the cause of the CTE. Mind blown.

Long Live Wanderlei and that Berzerker Balls to the Wall fighting Style!

Thats cool he is doing this - the Crocop Kick and Rampage Hook did severe damage no doubt!

I haven't seen any crazy signs of CTE yet with Wanderlei like we are seeing with Liddell.

Hope Vanderlei remains healthy and lives many many more years so he can see his boy Thor grow old.

It is what makes the sport so interesting...the damage, and balls to risk that damage.

I really wish Wandy had retired after his victory against Stann. It would have been a perfect moment.

can't believe somebody that's been punched, kicked, elbowed and kneed in the head as much as him has brain damage. not to mention all the gym wars and street fights he's been in. if you detect a note of sarcasm you might just consider yourself a perceptive one. if you didn't, you might just consider yourself a twat.

or be training in a time before anything was known about CTE, like the 90's...
Still, people had seen the likes of Ali, Sugar Ray, Hearns and many more boxers with major issues from damage done in fights.

Also it was known then that brain cells are the only cell in the body not to reproduce them selves.

Wand is an animal, one of my favourite fighters, I hate to see this happen to him so young.

There are going to be a lot of sad cases of this in the future.

Like Rambo said above, the danger is the thrill, especially for the spectators.

That's not really a great example. When Ali died in 2016, they still weren't able to say definitively that his Parkinson's was caused by boxing. The same issue plagues CTE. Last I had heard they believe there's a genetic predisposition to whom is more or less likely to develop it.

There are many examples of boxers, with major problems, due to the damage they took in their careers.

Genetic predisposition or not, it is obviously related.

Depending on the neurological condition you're talking about, and the predisposition. It's possible that it isn't related. A lot of people whom never compete in a combat sport still receive TBI's and end up with issues like Parkinson's.

Trust me, I am well aware of that. I saw it with my grandfather, dementia, parkinsons, strokes.

His brother , who boxed a lot longer, had none of those problems, a lung disease fucked him up in the end.

The 2 are still connected, there are way too many cases where guys end up fucked after long fighting careers.

Are you sure about that, or do you make that assumption because the ones whom are fucked up are so well known?

For every Chuck, there's a Tito.

I get what you are saying. I have seen it myself, in my own family, as I said earlier.

I was using high profile examples because they were well known cases, even at the time you are talking about.

I suppose there is no concrete evidence that repeated concussive blows to the head increase the chance of brain disease, or brain damage.

It is as much as 1 in 5 boxers, of certain eras, that show signs of CTE though.

These days there is usually more time between fights, better gear, better doctors, better understanding of the brain etc

We will see a lot less examples in the future, I hope.

On your Tito point, cleaner lifestlye, wrestler, less fights, less KO losses, less shots absorbed.

Chuck loved his white, had a lot more fights (kickboxing included) got knocked out more times and was way more inclined to trade shots throughout his career.

Anyway, your main point still stands, a lot less known about CTE back then.

We won't see fewer examples of this. The preventative measures are mostly cosmetic at best and reduce the probability of brain injury only fractionally.

This is just a brutal sport. We all bought the ticket and for the next few years we'll be taking some sad rides. Hoping Wand is able to have a good rest of his life.

- "CTE, previously defined as dementia pugilistica, was first described in 1928".

You, and the people who clicked agree on your post have worse CTE than Vanderlei.

"It was the 90s, everybody thought getting smashed in the head all the time was perfectly safe"

Jesus fucking Christ.

Look into the NFL CTE lawsuit from the 2000s and then come back and try to pretend it's been settled science for 100 years. The connection they're making from the 20s is the equivalent of shooting an arrow and painting a bullseye around it.
