I coach in a bitty basketball league that plays 24 minute games with a running clock (no stoppages for free throws and the like), a 6 minute half time, and 2 timeouts per coach per half. The timeouts mostly are used to change players on the court because the games go by so quickly. In years past, teams have submitted rosters of 12 or 13 players which, as a practical matter, leaves only like 7 minutes of actual playing time per kid. This year, our school decided to scrap that nonsense and go with smaller rosters so that the kids can play more.

Today, several parents complained that 12 players per team is preferable to 8, because their little Timmy is too gosh darn tired when there are "only" 3 bench players. Resisting the urge to respond that Timmy is fat as fuck because you fed him garbage and left him in front of the TV all summer, and that he should start running that shit off now so he's in good enough shape to play a very small amount of basketball.

It's pretty sad that the kids don't want to play the whole game tired or not. I bet those kids and parents are from white suburbia.

It's tough having to deal with that stuff as a professional. A few of my friends are teachers and they complain about it non stop - even my female teacher friend thinks we're raising pussies.

Usually it’s kids pushed into team sports by the parents after being raised to sit in their room playing Fortnight. I’ve taken all electronics from my son. He’s since taken up reading and practicing soccer in the backyard. He’s in 1st grade and they have him reading at a 3rd grade level. I could tell he was turning into a little bitch by always playing on the iPad, so I stopped that shit quick.

I don't blame the kids. The fat ones on my team are expected to practice and play just as hard as the rest. In 7 years, I've only ever had 3 of them quit because they were too fat to run. The fact that their (fat) parents let them quit for this reason instead of letting me work them into shape means that they never had a fighting chance in the first place.

After a couple of months of 90 minute practices, a mere 24 minute game seems like a cakewalk. If the other team hasn't been practicing that hard, we simply run them out of the gym and, but the end of the season, we're fit enough to play 2 or 3 games per day.

Saturday, my oldest did a basketball clinic at an area high school. They finished up with an hour of scrimmaging, briefly stopping every 6 minutes to make subs. He hid behind the taller players so they wouldn't sub him out and ended up playing the entire hour. Barely broke a sweat.

It's funny- most of the time when this comes up, people complain about this current generation of kids specifically, when it's actually the grown adults who have parents who are making this happen. Not saying you're doing this, but I have coached high school baseball for 10 years and one thing that I have learned is that it's not the kids, it's the parents. The generation of parents who are in their 40s and 50s right now are not allowing their children to struggle.

I never met a lazy, entitled, or soft kid where I met the parents and didn't go "oh, this makes sense."

I can't remember ever wanting to be taken out of a game.
My teams play a 3-guard rotation. Yesterday, during the first substitution, a guard that started the game was upset and loudly said "Awww!" when he found out that the other starting guard was being subbed out and he was staying in.

I immediately responded, "Oh, you don't want to stay in the game? It's okay. You can come sit on the bench instead of him." And there he stayed for the rest of the game.

He was gonna get the happy meal with an extra large strawberry milkshake as a reward afterwards regardless of how long he played as long as he was in the game I betcha!

local football coach got removed from his position cause the winey parents were hurt that lil johnny wasn't getting enough playing time. went all the way up to local politicians to get coach black balled from coaching. little johnny meanwhile was upset that he couldn't be in his room playing video games-- he never wanted to play football, but mom-n-pops wanted little johnny to get out of his room and stop playing on his computer. think this happens everywhere. i agree, mom and pops is at fault.

It's not all bad. My 3rd grade team beat the piss out of a 5th grade team tonight and has beaten multiple 4th grade teams this season.
