Hey all,

posted this in off-topic but it died pretty fast. Thought I'd try here

Have an 11-year old. He just finished Spider-Man and looking for his next fix.

I love the idea of OPEN CONCEPT games where you can roam and be more creative instead of following a set pathway. These seem to be rare but its such a good idea. I always remembered the Tony Hawk games were #1 for this reason, you could just freeskate as you please, make up your own challenges

I also loathe pure 1st person shooter games and war-glorifying games for him.

Are there any games left? lol (that seems to be all there is these days)

I am tempted to get RDR2 but I hear the mature content warning is fo realz (any insights to this would be appreciated. He's a pretty smart/mature kid but I still don't want him exposed for hours to something nasty)

Any games out there to recommend? A good exploring game, adventure game that not's too mature for a kid like GTA?

Oh, good racing games with huge airs and fun might be good too

Get Anthem when it comes out.
Thanks never heard of it, will research

Here is a writeup abot RedDead2:

Players use bows, pistols, shotguns, rifles, and explosives to kill enemies in frenetic combat; shooting enemies occasionally triggers a close-up, slow-motion view of enemies getting shot and killed. Players can also use tomahawks and knives to perform stealth kills to eliminate enemies discreetly. Large blood-splatter effects occur during battle, and some weapon attacks result in decapitation and/or dismemberment, leaving bloodstains and body parts on the ground. Campsites and cabin environments sometimes depict severed body parts and corpses with exposed viscera. Players may also engage in various criminal activities (e.g., robbing banks, shooting civilians), though this will negatively impact players' progress (e.g., wanted status, pursuit by lawmen and/or bounty hunters). Cutscenes also depict intense acts of violence: a man executed from the gallows; a character shooting himself in the head; a man repeatedly electrocuted; a bound man set on fire. The game contains instances of nudity and brief sexual content: a woman (breasts exposed) straddling a man inside a brothel; a spanking scene that is depicted from a distance and includes a fleeting depiction of male genitalia; sexual moaning sounds inside a tent; male characters with exposed genitalia in non-sexual settings (e.g., a man swimming in a river, corpses on the ground). During the course of the game, players' character can engage in a drinking mini-game in which alcohol is poured for drunken bar patrons; players' character is also depicted drinking alcohol, sometimes resulting in screen-distortion effects and impaired controls. One of the stimulant power-ups is known as Cocaine Gum, which players' character can chew; in one scene, characters can briefly be seen smoking from an opium pipe. The words “f**k,” “n**ger,” and “sh*t” can be heard in the dialogue.

-To those who have played, and/or parents; what do you think of this? Is it really that hardcore?

thanks

My god so many post-apocalyptic games! wtf

And they are all so violent! Its like no one dares make anything without massive blood/gore or guns

How uncreative imo, and irresponsible considering how many kids are into games. Do adults even need this? Why glorify the blood and violence all the time?

ugh

PS4 and an old wiiU

I don't want him to become a game junkie, its clear he loves it lol if I don't get tough for sure he would just play all the time

That's why I'm sort of encouraging for him to only have 1 or 2 games at a time so I wanna pick the choicest one for the next game.

Really spooked to be honest of the level of violence in gaming. To me it doesn't seem to hard to think up cool/fun concepts without the need for guns or ultra-violence.

I did a debate once in highschool, arguing against the proposal that 'playing with War Toys will have detrimental effects on a child' or something like that. I slayed the debate, lol because I played with GIJOEs etc and had no desire for violence from it... but since then I've had second thoughts and seeing the evolution of War Toys (ie; violent video games) nowadays has me right on the other side of the debate. That shit is not good for you I think. Imagine kids getting numb to it quick and absorbing 100s of hours of that.

Someone should design a game on the level of Spider-Man or RedDead, but pure fun and exploring, little focus on violence as possible. Is it really so hard? I bet it would slay

Wiiu

LEGO city undercover

Mario galaxy 1 and 2

Super Mario maker

Legend of Zelda breath of the wild

Ps4

Unless you’re looking at downloadable titles (rocket league, fez, mincraft etc.), lego games or VR, most games are adult based.

No it’s not that bad. GTA 5 is worse in my opinion. Granted it’s a rockstar game and does have adult themes but there is much more than that.
Like I said the story is top notch. Give you an option to be a good guy or bad guy which affects the ending and how the NPCs perception of you. 10 out of 10. That said I wouldn’t recommend it for kids. My girl plays it but she’s 13.
SpiderMan is a good game. Superhero game with an open world. Easy to pick up and play. Can divert from story and do side missions as any open world game. Good humor and game play. SpiderMan kills no one. No profanity and lots of Easter eggs to find.
God of War won game of the year( should have gone to RDR2 imho) lots of violence and gore. Great graphics pushed my PS4 hard that I had to upgrade it to a pro for this game. Great story though. If you are into mythology you’ll like this.
Minecraft is a good choice. Can build anything on there. My youngest plays this. Makes her come up with crazy architecture models. Once she made a 50 ft my little pony. I would say this is the safest bet. Little violence and you can explore hours on end.
Nintendo has lost of great options, but I believe that the WII u has discontinued making games for it as the switch is their primary console now. Mario Kart for one is a lot of fun. We have race night every so often. Wife, kids and I have at it for bragging rights for the rest of the week. Nothing more satisfying than blue shelling you kid right before they cross the finish line just to beat them for that first place. Zelda games are some of the best.
Hopefully you find the right game for your kid. I know I’m always looking at what my kids watch and hear. Lots of options out there. Look for the ratings on the lower part of box. M for mature, stuff like that.
I know you are not into first person shooters but Portal is a great game also. I know you can play it on XBOX 1 but not so sure about PS4. My girls and I played this hours on end. Older game but makes you think. No shooting people. Also if you have internet connection there are services that let you download games for like 10 bucks a month. Some of the games are good.

My nephew used to love Mindcraft until this Fornite shit came out.
I'm telling you that Fortnite game is like crack to those kids

They get HOOKED fast.

As far as I understand, in order to compete at higher levels they either have to play 100s of hours or pay real money to buy shit

The money is for just cosmetic stuff. Skins for characters and such. I haven't played it in months. I know its a free download for the battle royal mode. Won once and haven't played since. Now StarWars battle front is a pay to play game. You buy the game at 60 plus bucks and still have micro transaction in said game. Guns, armor, ect. That sucks. Person with money to spend will unlock over powered weapons before say someone who just unlocks it through game play. Rdr2 online also has microtransactions and its in a beta form. Not to mention dlc packs and such. Just careful. Dont want to pay for a game and come to find out that half is blocked with a pay wall attached.

I didnt realize RDR2 has micro transactions as well.

I drunkenly bought and downloaded the game a month or so ago, premium package so I assume without looking it includes all the dlc packs to date. I have put a few hours into the game and find it a bit slow so far.

Picked up keep talking and nobody explodes yesterday and played all night with my son. It’s 20 bucks on the pstore and you have to print out a 23 page bomb diffusing guide. Great game.
