Bellator plans to trim down on size but beef up the numbers in their next grand prix.

Scott Coker announced plans for a Bellator featherweight grand prix on Monday’s episode of “Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show”. Coker teased the news last week when telling reporters to “think smaller.”

Coker did not reveal who the competitors were, but did announce the grand prix would feature 16 featherweights. That is double the number of entrants compared to the…

Coker said the first 8 fights will all likely occur on one card. That would be outstanding.

I like this a lot. They will do well if they continue to do this and nobody gets injured

That is smart
Since some fights might be a mismatch or have fighters that are not known, it makes the card more exciting

They can have a couple alternate bouts, either on the prelims or on another card (either the card right before or right after). If no one gets injured in the opening round, the two winning alternates could fight each other in case they need a replacement for the semifinals. They could also have a bunch of unofficial alternate fights on surrounding cards with the rest of their Featherweights, in case they need more than that.

I'm not sure if it's better to do the first round all on one night, or spread out on back-to-back cards on the same weekend, but they shouldn't ever try spreading out the opening round more than that. So, yes please, props to Bellator if they do this.

Go all in goddammit!

Agreed on all things.
