So it took all this time and in the end he signed to a 2000's style 10 years deal?? Doesn't make any sense but then again I'm not following it closely. Just thought these massive contracts were a thing of the past.
He has a opt out after 5 years

doesn't make sense either. He will not opt out.
I think at one point ARod had the same thing in his contract when he was traded from Texas to the Yankees and he opted out for even more money. If Machado has 5 good years you better believe he will be opting out.

According to good sense he shouldn't ever get more than 30 million per year at 32 y/o but yeah things don't always make sense.

For all the players bitching about the slow free agency process and wondering why owners are so reluctant to sign these guys to long term guaranteed contracts...

I give you Albert Pujols

He's averaged 21 HR with a .243 average over the last 2 seasons.

At 39 years old, he'll make $28 million this season, $29 million next year, and $30 million in 2021.

St Louis obviously knew what was up when they let him go. Make a big enough offer to save face but not a offer he cant refuse.

Anyone that thinks Machado isnt worth 30 mil lets not forget that Alex Gordon is going to make 20 mil playing for the Royals this year.

That's enough money to get over the fact that he may not get into the Hall of Fame and will never win a World Series.
Why no HOF?
Are you referring to the stigma of the Rocky Mountain air?

He is a hell of a hitter, but he does have one of the more lopsided home/away splits I've ever seen...

MLB is shelving the pitch clock for this season, postponing its possible implementation until the new collective bargaining agreement takes effect.

Other changes the league is after...
  • 3-batter-minimum for pitchers
  • Further reducing mound visits. Last season it was 6. This season it is 5. The league wants 4 in 2020.
  • Shortening inning breaks from 2:05 to 1:55
  • Automated strike zones
The independent Atlantic League will again be a guinea pig for MLB for some of these proposed changes. They will begin using robot umps - paid for by MLB. Also up for consideration is moving the pitching mound back from its current 60'6".

Atlantic League Expected To Add Robot Umpires, Mound Changes Following New MLB Agreement

They should get rid of the shift. Its fucking ridiculous to have your 3rd baseman plating second. I understand that hitters need to get better at hitting gaps but even Ted Williams couldnt beat the shift being thrown low inside sliders at 95 MPH.

That's exactly why I said that.

He's a stud but Canton isn't kind to Colorado and his split is crazy.

I'm on both sides of that one.

I see the shift as an intelligent defensive strategy that a good hitter should be able to take advantage of.

But at the same time, I roll my eyes when the 3rd baseman gloves a grounder on the 1st base side of 2nd. How the fuck you supposed to score that?

I feel like Harper is playing Philly to leverage better terms from San Fran or LA.

If he was wanting to play in Philly, I think he would have just signed with Washington. Philly gives him the same shit weather, just adds a bunch of asshole fans.

I don't know. I don't really care. I think he is incredibly overrated anyway. No chance in hell I sign him to 10/300+.

He has been on some really good teams and had really good stats but was never even close to a world series. Same with Trout. One person can make a hige difference in a 7 game series and neither of them have showed up.

I think Philly offered the largest contract so far but he doesn't want to play there. Dodgers are probably only willing to do 4 year deal or just trying to drive up the price on SF.

I'm a Giants fan.Give him whatever the fuck he wants. 10 years 350 mill 3 year opt out. He probably isn't thrilled about hitting in our park but I'm willing to suck his dick to make up for it. We haven't had a 30+ home run season since Bonds in '04.

Harper really only had 1 great season and that was in 2015. The guy hit .249 last year. 169 Ks to only 137 hits.

Hell, by just about every measurable stat the Reds Eugenio Suarez had a better season than he did. Despite having 89 fewer ABs Suarez had 12 more hits, the same amount of HR (34), 27 fewer Ks and hit for an average of .284 vs Harper's .249

Yet after his 7th season, Harper is about to be the highest paid player in the league? Why? Because he has good hair?

I don't see it.

In 7 seasons Harper has only hit 30+ HRs twice.

22, 20, 13, 42, 24, 29, 34
