Trudeau has had one cabinet member resign due to inappropriate influence, another resign due to lack of confidence, another has now come out to say he was inappropriate with her.

He tried to have Butts fall on his sword for him but people are not buying it. This won't go away.

David Sidoo steps down as CEO of Vancouver companies in light of college cheating scandal
David Sidoo, a prominent Vancouver businessman, has stepped aside from roles as CEO of two separate companies in the city after being charged in connection with a college admissions cheating scandal in the United States.

East West Petroleum announced Thursday Sidoo's decision to take a leave of absence from his role, which includes acting as company president.

"Mr. Sidoo has decided it would be in the best interests of the Company to take a leave," read the statement from the oil and gas investment firm.

"The subject matter of the legal proceedings is unrelated to Company activities or business and Mr. Sidoo remains as a director of the company."

Advantage Lithium Corp., a lithium investor and developer, announced Sidoo's departure as its CEO in a nearly identical statement around the same time.

Sidoo, who is recognized in B.C. for his philanthropy in addition to his business endeavours, was charged with conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud in Boston, Mass., in connection with the nationwide scheme earlier this month.

The U.S. Justice Department claims Sidoo, 59, paid more than $200,000 to have an alleged imposter flown to Vancouver to write his sons' SATs for them in 2011 and 2012, to give the teenagers a stronger chance at getting into top American universities.

Sidoo is one of dozens charged in the largest known college admissions scandal in U.S. history, in which federal prosecutors said a California company made around $25 million by charging parents — including Hollywood actresses and other entrepreneurs — to secure spots for their children at elite schools by cheating the admissions process.

The scandal has triggered a $500-billion lawsuit accusing the well-connected parents of buying spots for their children, consequently keeping children of less wealthy parents out.

Sidoo was arrested in San Jose, Calif., on Friday. He is set to appear in federal court in Boston on Friday.

In a statement Wednesday, Sidoo's legal team said he intends to plead not guilty.

"We urge the media to recognize that Mr. Sidoo is presumed innocent," the statement read.

Canada extending military missions in Ukraine, Iraq
Canada extended its military missions in both Ukraine and Iraq today, taking a stand-pat approach to two of the world's flashpoint conflicts.

Late last year, the all-party House of Commons defence committee called on the Liberal government to "look for opportunities to expand the type of training and support" provided by the Canadian military to Ukrainian forces.

There will be no change, however, to the size and composition of the 200-soldier Canadian contingent.

Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland defended that decision, pointing out that the government is demonstrating its support for Ukraine in multiple ways — by, for instance, expanding the list of sanctions targeting Russian businessmen and by helping monitor upcoming elections in the eastern European country.

"I'm very confident this the support Ukraine needs," Freeland said of the renewed military mission, which will now extend to the end of March 2022.

She insisted the mission's terms are flexible enough to allow Canadian soldiers to offer various types of training and help to reform Ukraine's defence establishment — something the parliamentary committee also wanted to see.

"This is a mission, actually, that allows us to meet Ukraine's needs and to offer new forms of support as Ukraine needs them," Freeland said.

The Ukrainian army continues to battle separatists in eastern regions. Tensions spiked a few months ago when Russia seized three Ukrainian naval vessels and 23 crew members over a dispute in the waters off the Crimean Peninsula.

On Friday, in response to the incident in the Kerch Strait, Canada and several other western countries imposed further sanctions on Russian individuals, notably Vladimir Yakunin, a long-time ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Yakunin was placed on a U.S. sanctions list in March, 2014, shortly after Crimea was annexed, but the former Conservative government did not follow suit.

Freeland: ‘This is a strong action by Canada.’

Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland says action was taken in coordination with US and EU. 0:22
As the former head of Russian Railways, he had strong business ties with Canada — particularly with Montreal-based train manufacturer Bombardier Inc. In a 2015 interview with The Canadian Press, he was asked if those links had shielded him from being blacklisted by Canada.

"I suppose Canadians are not the same masochists, like, you know, Europeans," he said at a dinner involving news agency heads from around the world. "This is jokingly answering your question. I consider that I am known enough in Canada as a promoter of the idea of collaboration."

The Liberals, while still in opposition four years ago, promised to place both Yakunin and another Putin ally, Igor Sechin, under sanction. Freeland defended the length of time it's taken to deliver on that pledge.

"I'm very glad we've included them on this latest sanctions list," she said. "We do the work necessary to ensure that we are focused on the appropriate people. We've done that work. This is a strong action by Canada."

Yurii Nykytiuk, a spokesman for the Ukrainian embassy in Ottawa, said his government appreciates the extension of the military mission because "it helps save the lives of Ukrainian soldiers" and assists his country in pursuing its goal of one day joining NATO.

"It wouldn't be fair for me to say that we do not need more instructors in Ukraine, but the job the Canadian Armed Forces is doing is a tremendous job, and we value it very much," he said.

The Ukraine mission's mandate was due to expire at the end of the month.

The second mission being extended involves a training and advisory deployment in Iraq.

That deployment — leading the NATO training mission and giving direct support to the U.S.-led coalition that has been hunting down the remnants of the Islamic State group — will now continue until the end of March 2021.

The extension of the Iraq mission comes as no surprise. Last summer, the Liberal government agreed to lead the NATO training mission headquartered in Baghdad.

Canada is providing 250 soldiers, a headquarters, security forces and transportation to other alliance members training Iraqi forces to handle security on their own.

Separately and distinctly, Canadian special forces also are providing direct advice and assistance to Iraqi troops in the northern part of the war-torn country.

Sajjan said Canada's mission allows Iraq and coalition partners to "more effectively plan and execute military operations aimed at improving stability in the region."

Canada first deployed troops and fighter jets to the campaign against the Islamic State in the fall of 2014 after the extremist group captured vast swaths of territory in both Syria and Iraq.

When it’s in The best interests of the nation, I support it.
Fair enough.

How much weight does it carry though? Person recording can steer the conversation and be on their best behavior while other person is speaking frankly. I get why she did it but think she should have disclosed what she was doing at start of conversation. If he claimed up or changed his tune then that could be pretty significant too. I haven't followed this story super close so could be way off though.

You are way off Bruv. This guy was rotten to the core and needed to be exposed for all to see. This is a big time scandal.

Thoughts on recording a conversation without other party knowing about it?
Also, gross. As you pointed out it gave her the opportunity to steer the conversation BUT if he wasn't doing anything wrong she wouldn't have had anywhere to lead him.

In her case I'm willing to give her a "end justifies the means" free pass because she saw the writing on the wall and knew if she blew the whistle on them they'd lie and throw her under the bus so the recordings are an insurance policy. Its also worth noting that political offices recording phone calls isn't exactly a rare occurrence.

I realize the guys rotten, just curious about the secret recording specifically. Like BeardOfKnowledge @ConorMcGregorsBeard says the end justifies the means here and it's nothing new. JWR making the outgoing call with the intent to record just doesn't seem like the best approach though. Would have been better if she got him calling her or if she told him at beginning of convo then asked direct questions and see where he goes.

How has this played out for her so far?

How has this played out for her so far?
1) They demoted her for not playing ball and gave her job to someone who would.
2) Someone leaked that she'd been pressured into the thing.
3) The Liberals publicly said that nothing had happened and the reports were false.
4) Gerald Butts (JT's BFF) resigns from his position as head advisor to the PMO.
5) JT said he talked to her, they were on the same page and everything was cool. After all she was still in cabinet and that speaks volumes.
6) She quits the cabinet.
7) Some of the more Liberal leaning (party not political persuasion) media outlets started smearing her publicly saying the whole thing was sour grapes and she was known for being a bitch.
8) Opposition demands some sort of investigation so JWR can tell her side of the story.
9) Wernick says she's full of shit in committee.
10) She gives very, very detailed notes about how it all went down.
11) Butts gives his side of the story.
12) Pressure mounts to let JWR respond to Butts.
13) Wernick resigns from his job.
14) The Liberal run committee decides they don't need to hear JWR testify again because nothing happened and shut down the committee (if you do it on budget day maybe no one will notice)
15) This tape is released to the public.
16) She got fired from the party.

Now, that's also ignoring a couple other things that happened during this fiasco. Another cabinet member resigned because of how JWR was being treated, and another female MP said she isn't running again and that Trudeau was abusive toward her. In all instances JT has gone with "Well, we experienced those events differently." Also, that this whole thing was justified by "We need to protect the 9000 SNC Lavalin jobs and they're going to move their HQ to the U.K. if we fuck with them." both of these claims have been, for lack of better terms debunked. Mostly by the head of SNC Lavalin when he said he didn't know where those numbers came from or where they got the idea they would move out of spite because they have contracts with the province that force them to be there. What's been really interesting is the ever changing story of events by the Liberal party, they also continue to go further down the slander path with anyone who criticizes the party from within.

No one is coming out of this head, and JWR probably worse off than anyone else.

Thanks so for taking the time to post. I was up to date to #8 then heard about recording. Agree with final outcomes.
