Just thought I'd do a quick friendly survey. I was hoping for each possible reason that we could establish who the 1st or 2nd best country is.

For example, if you think the US is the best country in the world because of its strong military, can we all agree that Russia is the 2nd best country in the world?

How about total GDP? Can we all agree that China is the 2nd best country in the world? Or by purchasing power parity, is China now number 1?

How about GDP per capita? Along with several others, can we all agree that in fact Qatar is a better country than the US?

How about median household wealth? I'm afraid my shitty little country is in top spot there.

I'm curious for your reasons. What evidence do you base your greatness on?

Humans fundamentally are superpredators, and the USA is the best at that. Relatively shit QOL tho.

In terms of 2nd best, who cares?

But if you thought about it, you would agree then that by raw power then Russia or China would have to be the 3rd best then. India likely 5th?

When all the shitholes below us don't equal our number, does it really matter who #2 is?
I'm going to respond to this post more seriously then I should. Those numbers are heavily dependent on exchange rates, and the currently high US dollar skews it.

And exchange rate is not a fair measure of military spending - a Chinese soldier doesn't get paid near as much as a US soldier does in US dollars, nor do supplies cost as much. So China's real military expenditure is a fair bit closer to the US' than those numbers show.

And if China decided to spend a similar proportion of its GDP on its military, then even the nominal USD gap would be relatively minor.

There's a big technology gap between the US and China when it comes to the military, not really a financial one. And obviously that's important. Russia still has many capabilities that China doesn't despite being dwarfed in spending.

Considering current Chinese military doctrine is geared almost solely to winning a defensive war against the US, with eventual plans to be be able to carry out an offensive war on Taiwan, it's also got a big advantage over a US military that is designed to win on multiple fronts. So it doesn't need to spend near as much.
