Weidman immediately called for a “high risk, high reward” fight for his UFC debut against the “biggest 205-er” today. His confidence is so much on a high, even in a bout against current champion Jon Jones.

“Honestly I think I bring a lot of problems to the table with my wrestling, my jiu jitsu,” Weidman said during a media scrum at UFC 238 on Saturday. Also I’m long, and I have power in my hands — especially at 205, I think that might be a benefit for me. I think I’ll even hit harder.

“I think my wrestling and jiu jitsu, on paper, is better than his. The way he’s able to mix it up so well on the feet and then trick you with his standup and also look for takedowns, the way his uses his elbows and knees… We haven’t seen a guy do it as well as him. So I give him 100% props.

“But if I’m able to drag it into what I’m great at, I think I bring a serious problem,” he added. “And also my pace, my pace is something that I think I really bring to the table. I don’t know if a lot of 205 pounders can hold up to that.”

The 34-year-old Weidman went 1-4 in his last five fights. He last saw action at UFC 230 in November, where he lost to Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza via third-round knockout. He did take home a $50,000 bonus for Fight of the Night.

he had problems with gerard and rockholds length.. hopefully he does well but that's the worst possible match up for him.

absolutely unimaginable confidence in light of:

- he's going up 20lbs in fight weight to take on proper monsters
- he has recently had surgery(?) pretty certain he did. neck I think.
- last but most importantly, he has been bashed many times in his recent fight record. by fucking amazing opposition, without doubt.. but still. you get filled in at middleweight.. then to celebrate cos you get to eat more, but fight a larger opponent.

that is unusual. but he has a level-headed wife by all accounts. hope she can explain the required caution here

Perhaps the most over rated champ in history. As much as I dislike Jones, he would send Chris into retirement.

Worst thing about fighters is the absolute delusion they suffer.
God luck to The Chris, but he is not ever even going to get a title shot in this division.

Tough to call him the most overrated when he KO’d the GOAT in his prime and defended the belt against 3 former champs. Yeah yeah, Silva was clowning, Silva had a freak accident, Machida was on the down side, Belfort was past his prime. Doesn’t matter. Dude is legit. We could make the same type of claims in Chris’ favor: stupid spinning mistake against Luke, got caught against Yoel, was beating Jacare handlily until he was clipped. Etc. This isn’t a sport of “what if’s.” We have to give credit where credit is due IMHO.

This is the most hilarious (and spot on) response I've seen to Weidman's claim...

He could possibly win...if they let Matt Serra in there to grab Jones's ankles to distract him or something.

Well he's not wrong. He could bring Sierra's spaghetti, Longo's lasangna or Chris's cannelloni to the table. All of which could easily cause problems for Jon Jones' weight cut.
