John Lineker was released by the promotion this week, ESPN confirmed with his manager, Alex Davis, on Wednesday. MMA Junkie was the first to report the news.

The decision comes on the heels of Lineker withdrawing from UFC Greenville two weeks ago due to a cut he sustained just two days before the card. Lineker was scheduled to be in the co-main event against Rob Font.

Lineker (31-9) was on a two-fight winning streak and had won eight of nine before losing to Cory Sandhagen by split decision at UFC Fort Lauderdale in April.

Dana’s statement after Theodoro’s recent release:
“Yeah, well you know there is a ton of guys and girls that fight here. We have like 600 people on the roster. There is always times when we release people and they question. Well, why were these people released? I’m looking for people who can break into the top-five or possibly become world champions. And, I make these decisions. The real question is, ask me how many times I have been wrong? If you look at when I release people and who I’ve released, how many times have I actually been wrong about that? And, you will see people stick around that are on a skid that put on unbelievably exciting fights.

“It is based on your fighting abilities. They might be decent fighters, (but) they are never going to break into the top-five. They are never going to be world champions. I need to free up roster spots for people who will be.”

The Lineker release is pretty consistent with that statement except for the part about people sticking around if they put on exciting fights.

ok egg

he is and has been wrong...not that he thinks anybody keeps score

cutting people is all good...acting like danus is the all seeing eye of MMA talent is laughable at best

600 person roster, waay too big...no wonder nobody has name brand recognition

Trim that shit up

It seems kinda stupid of them to release the heavy hitter of the lower weight classes tho.

Linekar comes to bang Bros, bro.
Someone will let him bang.

Maybe we will get blessed and he will do bareknuckle boxing. Him vs anyone bareknuckle is must watch tv imo

He might...I haven't seen all his fights

when I do watch him it is mostly waiting for him to throw and only landing a few, I can remember a few brutal KOs for him but they were awhile back

Maybe he just needs to KO some other fighters and get that confidence back for another run

Such a stupid move, this is supposed to be entertainment. And he was hands down the most exciting fighter in that division.

It's consistent with a statement that Dana pulled directly from his anus that leaves him room to justify any arbitrary decision he wants, except for the part where it's not even consistent with it at all. Got it.

I’m willing to bet there’s over 100 fighters on their roster who’s names we wouldn’t even recognize.
All of whom get paid less than Lineker (as badly as he still gets paid).

They're polarizing the roster to cut costs. They are keeping people they think can headline cards or be future headliners, and getting rid of the mid-tier guys so that they can replace them with regional bums.

Damn dude.

Not that this is the thread to do it but I don’t think I’ve ever read a positive post by you.

You consistently post about how terrible the sport has become. If you are so disgusted and hateful about mma why do you continue to frequent the forums? I’m not insinuating that you should quit posting, I’m genuinely curious why you keep coming back to websites that obviously make you angry.

Haha. That post is a strange to use it as your launching point.

I'm just stating a fact. With the ESPN deal, the UFC is incentivized to cut costs, because they have guaranteed revenue. We will continue to see Lineker and Theodorou-type cuts.

You'd also find I'm not all that negative during live fight threads. I like MMA. I just hate pieces of shit like Dana.

Now that you mention it I do remember you being quite happy during live events.

I generally agree with the underlying sentiment of the majority of your posts. It’s the constant vitriolic tone of them that I find strange.

If I hated Danus as much as you seem to I would either find him at a UFC and confront him (admittedly that would not likely go well) or let that hate flow through me instead of damming it up inside, letting it fester and affect my emotions.

FRAT do what makes you happy (or angry), I was just curious what fuelled your incessant rage.

There are many different fuels for my incessant rage. It's a rich tapestry of self-hatred, alcohol-abuse, latent homosexuality and my mother constantly deliberately buying the wrong kind of frozen pizza and then refusing to let me order Pizza Hut on her credit card.

lineker is exactly the guy that the ufc is looking to cut.he has climbed as high as he is ever going to in the ranking.he doesnt really have enough fans to matter but he could still knock off some up and comers and wreck the ufcs plans. he is still young but has had 40 fights. he could still move on and fight elseware but his best days are behind him. there isnt much of an upside to keeping him other than he is fighting for 33k
