Hey all

So the wife grabbed a sudden flash deal for a 9 day trip/tour in EGYPT. Taking the kids and father-in-law (insert Clark Griswold photo here).

Problem is I really don't know shit about Egypt, aside from bits and pieces of stories and tales, most of which to be honest are not likely to pass any peer review sessions soon lol

I have roughly 2 weeks to cram, my wife is doing the same. But what to cram? What would be the funnest/most helpful info and sources of info to make the trip a bit more stimulating?

Should I watch STARGATE again?

Thanks

I'd like to know how contested the academic history is.

I watch a lot of conspiracy junk and they are always painting the picture that 'mainstream' history is full of flaws but is too stubborn to look past their own work etc, stories of past civilizations that go back further that ancient Egypt may point to, etc... but maybe that is all just fantasy stuff, I really don't know.

I am prone to think our history has been fucked with, and still marvel at the wealth of Egyptian symbolism that can be found among the elite circles of power all the way to present day, etc etc. These ideas haunt me but I have to face the fact that academic egyptology must deserve some credit and maybe I should put all that aside for a while and school me some proper his-story.

Are the dates of the Pyramids/Sphinx really still just theories? Is it actually a debated issue among different scholars, or is it just questioned by freaks like Graham Hancock and co?

What a wasteland. I find it odd that such a lush and great civilization for thousands of years is now a dead, barren and near-3rd world country. Where did all its power and greatness go?

It was settled because the Nile would flood and provide farming opportunities. Dig an aquaduct or two and people were in pretty good shape for miles around.

Add some plumbing and you got yourself a pretty solid civilization.

Food to eat. Water to drink. And the knowledge that poop and urine flow downhill.

That was a pretty nice setup for 5000 years.

They had a good run. Then Cleopatra killed herself and the Romans moved in.
