Not climbing, no way. I mean I'm going down a hill (road) but it's my pedaling that's getting my speed up. I could coast around 50kph or whatever but I crank my ass off and see what speeds I can get.

This is from a ride last week. My max of 75 is on a different route and I had a different bike at the time.

Fastest I can see going back through my DH is 66kph. I'll do my best to beat that this weekend.
Don't you worry about wiping out on corners if you hit sand, loose shit, etc? Or you spot that stuff in advance?
I did that before I had come off the rear brake once... and holy fuck did I lose a lot of skin on that.

Im very aware of the danger but I love that feeling. On my road bike I basically disregard the idea of crashing unless I'm going pretty quick with traffic close to me. On my MTN bike it's on my mind but it's not so much fear as it is a heightened sense of awareness and I feel like I can ride better, in "the zone" if you will. I actually get the most freaked out doing high speeds on my snowboard. I'm not sure why.

Yeah, snow is a lot more forgiving...but hell, maybe you're dodging pine trees.
Those speeds are foreign territory for me friend and I don't foresee my getting a visa to those lands anytime soon.

Sounds like you had a serious shoulder injury which may have made you more cautious. I've been relatively major injury free since my early 20s so maybe I'm a little ignorant lol.

That’s impressive. Since my 20s I’ve had a number of serious injuries that put me on the shelf for a bit. Nice work lol

Like I said earlier - I focus more these days on self preservation and have a “living to ride tomorrow” attitude. The young me would have called you a pussy for not riding hard enough to crash more often :D. We literally used to tell each other that if you didn’t crash once a ride that you weren’t trying hard enough. Since the back surgery, I don’t like crashing. At all.

Any of you studs been in the saddle lately?

I had a fairly big ride yesterday (a little over 22 miles, or 35ish km for you canucks ;)) on some sweet rocky/techy singletrack. A few little sodden plank sections and obstacles, and an assortment of jumps and kickers.

The heat has been brutal though. It’s crazy how much water and food it takes to maintain in this heat. The heat just sucks the energy out of you, and you will run out of gas if you aren’t replenishing along the way. Summer riding here takes a little conditioning.

We’re starting to plan our annual fall trip, which may be Bentonville Arkansas this year. It is literally the WalMart of mountain bike trails. Two of old man Walton’s grandkids are huge into mountain biking, and they have invested 30 million into building trails and revitalizing this small town.

By all accounts the trails are supposed to be really fun. Lots of fast and flowy singletrack. They’ve now got this little town outfitted with restaurants, coffee shops, breweries, places to stay, live music, etc. They’re making it a destination location with all the amenities appealing to the bike crowd. Plus, it’s only 7 hours from here (usually 15-18 when we go to UT or CO).

Mid October there is a big race/festival kind of event. Think we’re going to enter and race for shits-n-giggles, and then have a couple days on either side of that to explore the trail network.

Heading back to Spider Mountain tomorrow.

Time for a DH day! Will probably get about 15 runs in tomorrow if we use the chairlift all day. We may climb up the fire road a couple times just because though ;)

Going to be a fast paced trail day, hope I’m on point and don’t eat shit lol. There are a couple sketch spots, but lots of places to get air. Had some close calls last time trying to huck the jumps. As they day goes on and you hit some of them a few times, you start to get comfortable. And then I tend to get too comfortable eventually haha

Hope y’all are getting some biking in!

La Paix @BirdWatcher you should be in biking season now, yeah?

@blank are you still on your hiatus while traveling?

Onetrickpony @Onetrickpony when was the last time you dusted your bike off?

Good do hear some of us are still getting out. I've only been on about 8 good rides myself this year. I've been on my road bike much more so still having fun. Lifts around here close in a week or two then it's all person power to get up.

Dang, that’s sooner than I would’ve thought the lifts would shut down. My perception of seasons is off though after so many years in Texas. It’s been hot AF here, I’m ready for Fall and Winter weather where it’s a lot more pleasant to be out. We’re going to get scorched tomorrow. It’ll be 100 and full sun most of the day.

Some buddies of mine spent last week at Whistler. I’m pretty jealous!

My boy is finally into biking now. Hea been on his bike everyday now and is loving it. He’s getting tall though, just about outgrown the bike he got for Christmas. It’s about time to upgrade him from his 12” wheels to 16s :)

Ha, just got back in the saddle yesterday. One of the multiuse trails en route to the single track.

It’s cool to see a “cycling” thread here! We have no mountains in Florida so we stuck with gravel and road bikes. I love riding in general and can’t wait for it to cool down enough to get some road miles in. Anyway, continue on with MTB stuff. I’ll just sit here planning our next trip to where there are mountains to actual ride down lol

How far north are the Appalachians from you (driving time)?

A number of hours. At least 3-4 to get somewhere with real mountains. We have a few spots near us that have hills we can ride our roads bikes on but other than that Florida is pretty flat!

3-4 is a fair bit when one considers: packing, prep, unloading, setting off, and then biking enough to make the trip worth it. You'd have to start driving at 4 am to get anywhere by 8 just so you could ride enough to be able to get home before 6.
I have enough trouble making a 1 hour trip to foothills over here; you must have a crew to make that a doable venture.

I'm pretty out of touch with video games these days and haven't had a gaming system in years...but man that looks fun!

$20 to buy on Steam isn't too bad, but I'd have to buy a controller too. And I don't really know what Steam is either hah. Is that just an online based gaming system?

Have you been playing? I like how there is various line options and side trails, games where you can wander about are fun.
