Radioactive water from Japan's destroyed Fukushima nuclear power plant may have to be dumped into the ocean, the country's energy minister reportedly said Tuesday, igniting concern and anger from nuclear safety experts and Japan's neighbors in the region.

The electric utility overseeing the crippled power plant, Tokyo Electric Power Company, or Tepco, is running out of room to store the contaminated water, the minister, Yoshiaki Harada, said at a news conference. The water has built to a stockpile of more than 1 million metric tons, taken from cooling pipes being used to keep the plant's fuel cores from melting.

Tepco has said that it will run out of room to store contaminated water from the Fukushima plant in as soon as three years. A government panel is expected to offer its recommendations in the coming months.

However, the energy minister on Tuesday said that the country had few alternatives.
"The only option will be to drain it into the sea and dilute it," Harada said. "The whole of the government will discuss this, but I would like to offer my simple opinion."

Fuck that put that shit somewhere where it won't contaminate the ocean

Havent they been dumping contamination into the Pacific since the tsunami? They've done their best to remain tight lipped about the situation there.

Sounds like they are just prepping the public for when they dump it all without any decontamination.

All I can find are articles that this is going to be the end of days.

You can successfully dilute radioactive material in soil to a level that is essentially background radiation.

I have no idea what process would need to occur to do something similar with the ocean. I assume just pushing it out into the gulf that is nearby would keep it to concentrated and not thoroughly mix it. I would assume most of the people affected would be the Japanese themselves though associated islands and nearby countries have cause for concern..

I can't find anything about the process or if this has been done before.

Dumping into the ocean is the preferred method and has been for a while.

More than six years after a tsunami overwhelmed the Fukushima nuclear power plant, Japan has yet to reach consensus on what to do with a million tonnes of radioactive water, stored on site in around 900 large and densely packed tanks that could spill should another major earthquake or tsunami strike.

The stalemate is rooted in a fundamental conflict between science and human nature.

Experts advising the government have urged a gradual release to the nearby Pacific Ocean. Treatment has removed all the radioactive elements except tritium, which they say is safe in small amounts. Conversely, if the tanks break, their contents could slosh out in an uncontrolled way.

Another government panel recommended last year that the utility, known as Tepco, dilute the water up to about 50 times and release about 400 tonnes daily to the sea - a process that would take almost a decade to complete. Experts note that the release of radioactive tritium water is allowed at other nuclear plants.
There it is.
Japan, just send me my check when you have time, no problem.
