Barry Fay couldn’t believe what a neighbor was telling him: Google Earth showed a car rotting at the bottom of a pond behind his home.

“Why? Where?" he said. “There’s no car behind my house.”



Fay might have been even more incredulous had he known the car contained the skeleton of a man missing for 22 years.

The 50-year-old Wellington man called the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, which found the remains of William Earl Moldt, a Lake Worth resident last seen in 1997.


According to the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System, Moldt, then a 40-year-old resident of Lake Worth, was last heard from Nov. 7, 1997, around 9:30 p.m., when he called his girlfriend to say he was leaving a nightclub and would be home soon.

Almost 22 years passed. Finally, on Aug. 28, deputies got the call from Fay and lifted the car from the pond in the gated, single-family Grand Isles development in Wellington, where Fay had moved 14 months before from Sunrise.

I wonder how many more cars will be found in lakes on Google Earth now that this one has been found.

The water in Florida lakes and canals is so dark that it's hard to see what's under it with the naked eye.

It's how alligators are able to ambush tourists.

@Splinty plus they (I'm using the word they begrudgingly because you're from Houston and there are a few dozen alligators there, though I'd love to lump you in with these idiots) do really stupid shit like go swimming in lakes at night or walk their dogs next to lakes, both examples of which have "Beware of Alligator" signs.

When I was a kid I visited extended family in Maryland. When all my cousins and their friends went swimming in the local river, I was the only 7-year-old standing 50 feet from the bank holding a spear I'd just carved from a stick.

No one where I lived owned horses. It’s all small homes, duplexes, quadplexes, and triplexes. It’s the only part of Wellington that’s not in a neighborhood, so anyone can move in when the landlords don’t have requirements. We didn’t need to prove income or do a background check, just provide the cash and sign the lease.

I grew up in both Louisiana and Texas. On small waterways with alligators in it for most of it. My extended family is in Florida and I've tubed the St John's with a healthy fear of the alligators waiting for me if I fell off.

East Texas knows alligators. But that doesn't mean we're infallible... It only takes about 8 Bud lights and things go awry...
