Patricio Freire believes he’s the best featherweight to ever live – and he plans on using the Bellator featherweight grand prix as a means to prove it.

A longtime veteran, dual champion Freire (30-4 MMA, 18-4 BMMA), who also holds the Bellator lightweight title, defended his 145-pound belt in the opening round of the tournament on Saturday when he defeated Juan Archuleta (23-2 MMA, 5-1 BMMA) in the Bellator 228 main event in Inglewood, Calif.

“Pitbull” has competed in the promotion since Bellator 15 in 2010. One year after his debut, Freire clinched the featherweight title with a unanimous victory over Daniel Straus at Bellator 45.

The Brazilian lost and regained the 145-pound strap twice over the next eight years. In his last outing before Saturday, he secured the Bellator 155-pound championship when he finished then-champ Michael Chandler with strikes.

Entering the featherweight grand prix, “Pitbull” said he is on the verge of dominating a third “generation” of Bellator talent. If he walks away victorious, the 32-year-old competitor has faith the masses will regard him as the greatest of all time.

“I see (the grand prix) as a way to test myself and face guys I haven’t beaten before,” Freire told MMA Junkie on Monday. “I’ve dominated two generations of Bellator featherweights, and I’m going to dominate the third. I want people to write in the history books I’m the greatest featherweight fighter ever, and I’m aiming at greatest all around. The tournament is a good way to settle that.”

Often times when the question arises of who the greatest featherweight of all time is, a certain Brazilian is one of the first names mentioned. While many believe Jose Aldo is the 145-pound GOAT, his fellow countryman Freire firmly disagrees.

“People talk about Jose Aldo; where is he now?” Freire said. “I’m a double champion, my results are only getting better, I’m setting new records, and I plan to continue extending all of those.”

When he considers the landscape of the 16-man tournament, Freire sees a lot of scores that need to be settled. Whether it’s putting an end to his ongoing rivalry with A.J. McKee or getting to finally face off with former bantamweight champion Darrion Caldwell, “Pitbull” likes options.

“I can say it’ll have a special feeling if it happens to be A.J. McKee and Darrion Caldwell,” Freire said. “These guys talked all that crap and think they can get away with it. You saw what happened to the last one that said shit about me and my family. These guys will pay one way or another.”

I'd like to see that fight.
He's been doing pretty well for himself by making noise so far.

I think he could beat Aldo.

He hits with more power and he's a better grappler (or at least he's better at remembering he has a submission game and actually applying it).
Aldo is faster on the feet and more technical all around striker.. better takedown D and is just as powerful..D Strauss is never beating Aldo..

Pitbull avenged that loss (in his career, he only ever lost to Straus once, and just barely). The only loss of his he hasn't avenged is Benson Henderson, and that's only because he hasn't had the chance.

And you don't think Pitbull has...?
Are you implying that pitbull has beaten or even fought the level of competition that Aldo has?

Like it or not, the vast majority of the best fighters are in the ufc or are about to enter the UFC, not bellator. Ask Will Brooks, Gegard Mousasi, Hector Lombard, Rory MacDonald, Liam Mcgeary, and Ryan Bader.

I remember when everyone referred to StrikeForce as 'StrikeFarce'. Those guys weren't good enough for the UFC either. Until they went over and won belts in nearly every weight class.

Werdum and Cormier did amazing I agree, but they also lost to Stipe and Jones. But Werdum was more of a UFC guy than a strikeforce guy anyway.

I'm not saying that Patricio can't go to the UFC and do well, he definitely can obviously, but Aldo has proven himself to be one of the very best.

Patricio has not, and he's asking where aldo is.

Werdum, Cormier, Romero, Rockhold, Woodley, Lawler, etc. All were said to be either not good enough for the UFC or 'washed up has beens'

Patricio has, you just don't realize how good his competition has been because the UFC has you convinced that they have all of the best fighters in the world, which just isn't true.

Bellator isn't strikeforce though lol. For example, Bader has been wrecking shop in Bellator.

Kongo beat Vladimir too lol. At 44 years old. I don't know why you keep mentioning Strikeforce when we are talking about Bellator. 2 different companies. Different fighters.

Aldo has literally fought the whos who of the featherweight division.

You're just assuming that Pitbull has fought the same of level competition. You're not basing that on any special information that I'm not aware of. You just want to believe that Pitbull has fought the same level. The bias you say I have towards the UFC, you have just as much bias against the UFC

We both KNOW that the majority of the best fighters are all in the UFC, fought in the UFC, or trying to get into the UFC, NOT Bellator. That's who Aldo has been fighting forever.

Pre-Conor Aldo beats any version of Pitbull, in my opinion, though Patricio is a world class talent.

Ask them what?

Gerard Mousasi is the most underrated fighter in history. He could've easily been in the GOAT conversation amongst UFC-only watchers, had he been given the opportunity.
He told BLAF he'd step in against anyone, including Jones. NO ONE accepted.

What about Rory?
Let's talk about that, & the entire Bellator WW, OR FW division.

And Bader?
Ha, well he already answered that question in case you're unaware.

How many thought Pitbull stood no chance vs. Chandler, or Patricky vs. Thomson not far removed from KO'ing Diaz?

The correlation brought up between Strikeforce & Bellator is because it's team Coker, whatever name you give the org.

Dana has everyone brainwashed.
And he's the one that won't co-promote.
Why?
Cuz Chuck got Rampaged and he lost $250,000.00. And had anyone in the US been paying attention, it would've cost the UFC tons in lost revenue over the perception of "who's really the best" at LHW.

Wanna talk about the heavyweight divisions?

The UFC is where you get tested and see who is really the best.

All the guys I mentioned all lost big fights in the UFC.

In 2019, You have to go to the UFC to see if you are really the best. Pride and Strikeforce don't exist anymore. UFC is the measuring stick, I'm sorry you can't accept that.

Pitbull is a very good fighter, but he hasn't proven himself to be the best, not even close. So him asking where Jose Aldo is, is funny.

Cause Jose Aldo has been proving himself to be among the very best for the past decade. Jose should be asking where Pitbull is.

Sure we can talk about the HWs. I would love to.

Do you want to talk about how Werdum and Cormier both got finished by Stipe, the CURRENT HW champion?

Or how 44 year old Kongo put an end to Vladimir's big win streak?
