‘Cannonball Run’ race record broken with 27-hour, 25-minute drive across US

View: https://youtu.be/M6s9o6uIWZw

It’s a record that doesn’t officially exist, and legally can’t be broken, but a team has obliterated the legendary “Cannonball Run” mark by driving across the USA in 27 hours and 25 minutes.

Road & Track first broke the news that cross country racers Arne Toman and Doug Tabutt, along with spotter Berkely Chadwick, left New York City’s Red Ball Garage just after midnight on Nov. 10 in a modified Mercedes-Benz sedan and drove to the Portofino Inn in Redondo Beach, Calif. — the same start and finish points used during the first “Cannonball Baker Sea-To-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash” in 1971.

They weren’t taking part in a competition, although both drivers had before. Toman tells Fox News Autos that he’s made the run five times during illicit transcontinental events, but this time it was a solo effort specifically designed to break a record set in 2013, when Ed Bolian, Dave Black and Dan Huang completed the route in 28 hours 50 minutes, which was over two hours faster than the previous best time.

previous records suggest a distance of about 2,863

They were averaging around 104 miles per hour the entire time.

I'm on the go so can't look up a map but I assume some of these areas are through urban centers or other very slow roads, requiring some areas to be much higher speed to make up for it. That's really a hard time to be I bet.

it's the refueling time that kills your average.

An electric vehicle with inductive charging from a donor vehicle wouldn't stop and would crush this record.

That’s some damned good going. Was it an emergency?
nah. but I was traveling on orders in the USAF. Not that it would have necessarily helped me if I got pulled over, but sometimes it did. I'd spent 8 weeks on an Army base, I was going as fast as I could in the opposite direction.

but that car had a HUGE gas tank. I only stopped twice for gas that whole trip. But by the time I hit Kansas, the white lines on the road looked red. Later on, I realized that was because my eyes were so bloodshot that anything white looked red.

Christ, lol. Pegging it probably kept you awake.

I did 10 hours in a Mini from Tuscany to Germany once, it was horrible. The roads in Switzerland are absolutely terrible so I couldn’t even really admire the scenery, or put my foot down. I nearly cried when I found a hotel to check into.

They modified the fuel cell and only stopped 4 times for gas. Their total time stopped was 22 and a half minutes. Top speed was 193. Very crazy.

i was rolling at night. I left the base in the late afternoon, IIRC it was the week after Memorial Day.

What's more impressive is the time I drove from Iowa to Arizona in 20.5 hours (1500 miles or so).
In a Chevy Astro minivan that belonged to my friend's mom.

Loaded with several hundred pounds of tools and my dad's 1/4" plate steel tool chest.
The rear suspension was sitting on the snubbers, the front suspension was barely touching the ground. We were such idiots.

We did not tell his mom about the tool chest, so she didn't look to us for an explanation when the transaxle dropped out of the van a month later.
