and FWIW, I do agree that this mostly politically-motivated, in that if the shoe was on the other foot (which it obviously is in relation to how Biden/Ukraine or Clinton/China went down), then the process would look exactly like it looks now.

But in my estimation, that's the strongest case for breaking out some bud-nippers and getting to work. If things are really that grimy in DC, then it's time to flush and scrub. Trump is the beginning, but that doesn't mean that "we the people" should stop there.

Does it not matter that the person he supposedly threatened said multiple times he wasn’t threatened?

Not really. Because constitutionally they are not the victim.

The constitution is there to protect Americans and the office from corruption. Not Ukrainian presidents.

He was asked to do something that wasn’t against the law in his country by someone who he thought held the final say on receiving 450m of aid. Aid that was to be spent on weapons to defend themselves against the Russians.

10s of thousands have died in this war. Damn straight he would do what was asked.

He wanted help and it was said would do anything for it.

as I mentioned above, no it does not. He withheld funds. That's an abuse of power. And looking at how he didn't divest himself of his international business interests, and that he appointed Jared to oversee policy in the ME, where they both have massive personal financial interest (acknowledging that the Bidens and Clintons did the same), then I would say it's a pattern of abusing the powers of his office.

IMAO. I tend towards full of shit, but every now and then I see through the BS and call it down the line.

this sounds like another rationalization. "He's not on tape, no one says they actually heard him."

do you really think that someone else was withholding the funds without his knowledge - at or above the level of the ambassador?

EDIT - and do you think this is an appropriate standard of guilt to hold people to when they wield the power to pardon any crime?

So If Ukraine had elected a known dictator to be president the US would still be forced to give aid?

Again not the point.

It was being withheld though. Another crime btw.

Until he had the money/arms he would do anything for his people to get said arms. He had just been elected. And was very green.

Trump asked for a favour after proffering said arms. That was the crime.

Like a capo leaning on a local pizza joint.

Nice country you got. Shame anything would happen to it. Capeesh?

no. it's very common for the Congress to attach conditions to the disbursement of funds. Presidents commonly go to Congress and ask that conditions be put on the disbursement of funds.

That's not what happened here. Congress made clear their intent to bolster the freely-elected government from the encroachment of a dictatorship. That dictatorship also has strong financial ties to the business interests of the President, but let's set that aside for now.

Trump withheld funds in opposition to the will of the Congress.
That's an abuse of powers, as defined in the United States Constitution.

So if Hillary wins election in 2020 and republicans win house the house could force Hillary to give Russia a billion dollars.

Edit.

I doubt he would have stopped aid. Just as a natural grifter he wants to see what it’s in it for him.

Even though the stuff he is offering isn’t actually in his personal gift to give.

absolutely. That's in the Constitution. The Executive can ask the Congress for changes, but the Congress has final say.
